William Metcalf (1820) married to Catherine Thompson in September 1938. I have found William in the 1861 census - for misc ships and vessels as he was a mariner at sea or in port. However, I cannot find Catherine in any of the census. As far as I know she was living in Sunderland. William and Catherine definately had one son James Metcalf born 26/08/1842, there may well be other children. I have tried to search in the census for Catherine and James but have found nothing. I bet someone out there can find them - thanks Maxine x

Hi Susan Thanks for this. I Think we may be on the wrong track. James Metcalf (1842) definately stayed in England as he married Alice Dembry in 1864. Also I know William Metcalf (1820) was a mariner as he went away to sea. But thanks anyway.

It looks as though Catherine married Joseph Viley in 1850 so William must have died before then

Maxine - do you have both of William's marriage certificates and James b 1842 birth certificate to make sure everything ties up?

Maxine

Maxine Report 17 Sep 2011 13:13

Thanks to you all. OK - I will try to confirm the information I already have. I have James Metcalf (1842 - 1869) birth certificate, marriage certificate and death certificate. All documents refer to his father as William Metcalf (mariner). The birth cert shows parents William Metcalf and Catherine Metcalf (formerly Thompson). Free BMD shows the marriage of William Metcalf (recorded as Mitcalf) to Catherine Thompson. I dont have a marriage certificate for William Metcalf and Catherine but believe free bmd to be fairly accurate. James Metcalf (1842) was a shipwright and he died of heart disease at the age of 27 in 1869. His widow Alice Dembry remarried Thomas MacDonald in 1872.

William Metcalf may well have died before 1850 and Catherine Thompson may well have remarried Joseph Viley in 1850.

The reference in the 1841 census to the family living in Pottery Bank would tie up with James Metcalf (1842) birth certificate as the address on it is shown as Pottery Bank.

Thanks for all your input - I hope this helps you to confirm your research. I think we are on the right track. Maxine

Thanks Maxine
In the 1861 census James Mitkiffs is a shipwright as is Joseph Viley.
Seems to all tie up.

Hi Astra - I have sent you a message - must have crossed in cyberspace haha. Inm not sure about this the 1841 census shows James metcalf as 25 and William as 1. This could be just a recording error, except my James Metcalf wasnt born until 26/08/1842. Also I thought my William Metcalf was at sea in 1861 so his widow couldnt have remarried in 1851. It is all very confusing - any suggestions as to how I establish which William Metcalf and which James Metcalf are the right ones - nightmare! Maxine

Astra Report 17 Sep 2011 16:36

I have just sent you a message too.

I think the James married to Catherine on the 1841 census could in fact be William. He may have been William James and preferred to be known as James it's difficult to say. I don't think that their son William is your James. He appears to be their first child and may well have died. The address Pottery Bank matches with the address you have on James birth certificate and the Catherine on that census matches age - wise with the Catherine who married Joseph Viley so I think it's a pretty good bet that it is the correct family. Especially as James is noted as a shipwright on the 1861 with Catherine and Joseph.
