Find Ancestors

Hi All,
2 questions-does anyone know at all exactly what year on a birth certificates when the PARENTS birth place is listed on the full certificates?I know they dont appear on the 1800's or early 1900's birth certificates,just the parents names appear but on the newer certificates parents names and places of births are listed but I need to know what year they first appeared on there.
2nd question-does anyone know when flights become popular transport between contries?I have my father-in-law as being born in Canada (1929)but in 1952 he had married here and was living here, but I have searched through I dont know how many immigration/travel records but cannot find him moving to Britain (or his parents) so was wondering if they may have flown here???

Which country does the cert info query refer to?

Commercial flights have been in existence for many years..........check on line for the foundation dates of the various airlines

thank u Flick for the info about the flights.I just need to find out roughly when they became more likely to be used than ships as theres no record of the family coming to England.Ive checked all possible records on Ancestry and fmp and dont seem to apprear at all so thinking flights must of been there passage back to England.
sorry forgot to say which country lol England birth certs.I want to order a birth cert for the parents birth place but no point me ordering it if its not on there,so need to find out which year they first appeared. :-)

Not sure when parents' birthplaces were added.
It's not on mine, but I think it's on my childrens' born in 1970s and 1980s, but there is generally a restriction on birth certificates for births less than 50 years ago.

it seems you know their names ? you can search for them in the 1911 Canadian census free of charge

and depending on what province they married in ... if they married in Canada ... their marriage record might be available on line, in Ontario at Ancestry or in British Columbia at the BC vital records site for example ... also birth records for over 100 years ago ( if they were married before 1929 that would fit ) for some provinces on line

I know my father in laws first marriage was in england in 1952 and I ordered it forgetting your place of birth isn't included on it,so was going to order his first sons birth certificate(1953) to see if it was on there.his death certificate states he was born in Canada but not where a bouts in Canada.his father was born in northern Ireland and easily found him in census records.his mother was also born in Canada in 1906 and the only one I've found seems like a match but looking into later census records it appears that its not a match as she appears unmarried and without her son in 1930 USA census(appears with the same members of the family from the 1911 Canada census).the mothers death cert states she was born in Canada but not where.

Place of parents' birth will not be on a 1953 birth certificate.

Not sure why you ask about English birth certs, as nowhere in your text can I see any indication that anyone you are researching was born in England...........

Just to say that the information on the birth certificate for parents' place of birth will be as accurate as the person giving the information believes to be true.
I have given my husband's place of birth on a 1991 certificate, but it is taken on trust that it is accurate.
If my husband had been born in place A, but brought up in place B, then I could just quote place B without checking up further.
(So parents' place of birth definitely showing by 1991, but think other children have removed their copies so cannot check further back).

Birth certificates issued after 1969 are presented in the 'portrait' fashion, and also include the parent's place of birth. The mother's occupation was included from 1984 onwards.

If you read the thread flick it says the son was born in england in 1953.

it does depend which province in canada he was born as to what records are available online/ re birth record for him in canada.

have you found his father travelling from ireland to canada?

if you could find his parents marriage in canada it may give a clue as to where he was born

does he have any siblings/ and where any of them born in canada?

Familysearch.org have some canadian records maybe worth trying on there its free to use too.

I'm a bit puzzled by the thinking here. If I follow you, you're saying that no one needs record immigrants who can afford exorbitant prices to fly - have I got that right?

Anyway, flying became the most popular mode in the late 1950s is my guess. In 1967, the RMS Queen Mary was sold by Cunard to the City of Long Beach CA where it's moored and is a touristy thing.

No UK records were kept of immigration from Europe, so if you flew to Shannon or Orly and then took a ferry to the UK - no records!

In the early 1950s the cheapest way to fly from N America was to take a non-trans-Atlantic flight to Reykjavik, and then take an intra-European flight to London. In the early days, there was a price-fixing pact amongst the European nations, but for some reason, Iceland got left out of this. It was still way more expensive than the boat though. You needed planes that could carry a lot of passengers each trip to bring prices down.

I was born in 1957 and my parents names and addresses (at the time) are on the certificate but this is not their place of birth. Haven't got long certificates for my children born in the 80's and can't remeber giving my place of birth when registering ...but it was a while ago!!

There was no change on BMD certs thru 1969q1. You can see old examples in the appendices at:

My father in law was (according to death certificate) born in Canada.his mother was also born in Canada (according to her death certificate).his father was born in magheradrool (N.I.).His mother Elizabeth Gallagher was born 1906 but I am struggling to find out where abouts in Canada she was born.Like I say on the earlier post,I did find what I thought was the perfect match only to find her in the 1930 usa census unmarried and without her son Edward O'Prey.Ive looked at my partners birth certificate and his father did state on it he was born in Canada but not where abouts,so its a definate he was born in Canada in 1929.Ive thought maybe the family came back to Ireland and married (Elizabeth Gallagher and James O'Prey) then moved to England,but even so I still cant find any reference to any of the family moving to Great Britain from Canada.But then Edwards birth in Canada doesnt really tie in with that theory.I have looked thought the England records for a marriage for james and Elizabethbut came up with nothing so I have to assume they married in either Canada or Ireland sometime around 1928.

Just to say that we left England for the US in 1967

We could have sailed on the Queen Elizabeth for £100 or flown by BA, also for £100


It was a hard decision to make, but we opted to fly, and spend 3 days at Expo 67 in Montreal, instead of spending 5 days on the QE

Hi Lorraine thats the right one,well thats the one I thought was the right one.I searched under the sisters name( I think) and found them in a couple of places in the 1920 and 1930 USA census,cant remember which area now though,was one I hadnt really heard of.
The fathers names was James Thomas O'Prey born in Magheradrool , northern ireland,1898.He appears on the 1901 and 1911 Ireland census'.I am stumped as to now finding out which states of Canada they were originally from.I did find a James O'Prey traveling out the country but looking at the record it states he was born in Scotland and looking through further records there is a James O'Prey with a matching year of birth born in Scotland so I cant find him travelling to Canada or Usa either.Frustrating and confusing lol the family seem to appear out of nowhere.They did settle in Hudderfield where both parents died.
