on the marriage cert of Frederick in 1858 having looked again , his father's occupation is Mace Sergeant and not police sergeant

In the 1861 census I don't think he is mayor - there are three entries on the same page which read Mayors (Sergeant at Mace) which according to Google is a civic post for guarding the mayor's ceremonial mace.

Have to go now, but I would check the papers. here's Jonesey's thread regarding joining online for free;

I have found many things by doing this and as he was a prominent person of the area it should state something.

The age on that 1861 census has been mis-transcribed, it should be 57.

I have to say it does look like the same person but I would have to be very sure, To go from being a cordwainer to a Police inspector in 10 yrs plus bening widowed and then remarrying seems very quick.

On the 1841 he appears to have several children, have you traced them? Elizabeth who was only 1 yr old in 1841 where is she in 1851?

There is a marriage for James Woolcoot in 1858 on london records however that states his father as Frederick Woolcott Police Sergeant.

Name: Harriet Hillier
Spouse Name: James Woolcott
Spouse Age: Full Age
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 26 May 1858
Parish: St Mary at Lambeth
County: Surrey
Borough: Lambeth
Father Name: Robert Hillier
Spouse Father Name: Frederick Woolcott

This doesn't look likely to be the same person, given the drastic change in occupation.

I will take a look.

Hi Everyone.
Can anyone solve a problem for me.
1841 census. Frederick Woolcott, Cordwainer, married to Isabelle Soper,
lived with family in Preston St. Exeter, Devon.
I have a death for Isabelle in 1846 and then a marriage for Frederick in 1848 to Jane Fare.
1851 census Frederick living with Jane and 2 children in Exeter, but his occupation was Inspecter of Police.
Was it possible for him to climb the ranks in so shorter time.
His death was 1861, I would love to know if he died 'on the job' so to speak, and do I have the same person.
Regards,
Ann
