Sara, I think the only way you can proceed is to order William Edwin Lambourne's birth cert (reference is above) - that will tell you who his mother is and we can go from there.

Best wishes

Lots did not tell the truth, whether illegal or otherwise.

Thanks for looking anyway - Im beginning to think they weren't really married. Is that a possibility or was it illegal to lie on a census?

Nothing showing, sorry.

Looks like I might have been barking up the wrong tree with Sarah Lambourn being Williams mother. If anyone can help find a marriage between Shadrack (born in Didcot, Berks) and Elizabeth (born in Dudley Port, Staffs) sometime around 1877-1881 I would very much appreciate it.

Hi Sara
Until an act of parliament of 1907 a marriage with a sibling of a dead spouse would have been considered incestuous. Wealthy catholics may have been able to get (on payment) a dispensation from the Pope.

Henry VIII's first wife, Katharine of Aragon, was previously married to his brother. When Henry's eye alighted upon Ann Boleyn, one of the arguments used for the annulment of his first marriage was that it was illegal anyway. At least Katharine kept her head!

Best wishes

BTW Kim,

Can you explain why it would've been illegal for him to marry 2 sisters? Did you mean if it was just at the same time or because they were sisters?

WOW!! Thank you Kim and Patchem for the fantastic help you have both given me.
It was the 1881 census that threw me because Shadrack had Elizabeth as his wife but she was born in Staffordshire. Then on the 1891 census he was still married but there was no wife listed. I thought Id found her listed as Sarah E in Eynsham with her parents (as Williams name is William Lambourn Page on his marriage certificate) but by 1901 Shadrach is married to Jane.
Like you Kim, I cant find any marriage between Shadrack and either Sarah or Elizabeth. Also, I think Shadrach himself was illegitimate as there is only his mothers name on his birth certificate but she later married Edwin Butler so that would explain the name there.

I will be ordering the certificates suggested and fingers crossed I hit lucky. Again, thank you both for the help Sx

Cynthia, thank you for all your help for this newbie - it was very much appreciated (and needed) x

Hello Sara and welcome to the boards.

It may be worth putting the name Shadrack Page into the Search Trees box above (in the dark green bar), as several members on this site have that name in their tree. There are also some under the spelling of ShadracH - but they are too early to be yours.

If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owner. Cx.

I've tried looking for Jane Lambourn(e) born Eynsham Oxfordshire about 1871 but she appears only on the 1891 census - a domestic servant to a clergyman in St Pancras. The only Jane Lambournes whose births were registered around that time were in Berkshire and Hampshire.

According to the 1881 census, the Lambournes had a daughter named Jane born about 1875.

I think you need to order William's birth certificate and the 1901 marriage certificate to try and clarify the matter. It certainly appears that Shadrack and Mary E were not married and therefore his marriage to Jane would not have been illegal.

Best wishes

I think this is your William's birth registration (Samuel also had the middle name Edwin):

William Edwin Lambourn registered in Greenwich Oct-Dec 1887 vol 1D pg 993

I've just checked the marriage index on FMP and can't find any marriage between Page & Lambourne between 1875 and 1888

Patchem, assuming it's the Royal Victoria Dock, it's in Woolwich. Military connection, maybe?

I wonder whether her "Sunday name" was Sarah but she went as "Elizabeth", possibly her middle name?
