Hi all, Another plea, we are off to Hampshire this weekend to try and find the elusive Stephen. Apart from Parish records can anyone suggest any other sources to look at? How far back do electoral roles go? Any suggestions would be gratefully received
thanks

Hi all, thanks for your thoughts on this so far. We are going to visit the Hampshire archive shortly so just thought I would push this post back up to the top of the list to see whether this generates any more ideas from you helpful lot to help find my great grandfather!

Gwyn,

The two witnesses were Edwin Gibbons (an uncle to Celia) and Winifred Mary Slade - sister to Celia (after she has married Joseph Edgar Slade). Unfortunately no clues to Stephen. The marriage was in Bicester (which is either in Bucks or Oxfordshire) and therefore it is possible that none of Stephens relatives would have attended the wedding from Hampshire.

Thanks

Marjorie,

Many thanks - we will look on the Kingsclere site and see if that gives any clues.

Thanks

Lynski, Im not sure but this may be the same family as above, but earlier? I have not been able to find a record in 1871 that matches either particularly well, but in 1861 I can only find 1 suitable family:

WEBB, Ann Wife Married F 44 1817

What does anyone else think?

I feel bad as everyone is being so helpful, but we think we have found this one too.... In 1891:
WEBB, Stephen Head Married M 39 1852 Agricultural Labourer Carter

WEBB, Sarah Wife Married F 38 1853

WEBB, Charles Son M 14 1877 Agriculture Cow Boy

WEBB, Edith Daughter F 2 1889

then in 1901:
WEBB, Stephen Head Married M 47 1854 Farm Carter

WEBB, Sarah Wife Married F 45 1856

WEBB, Charles Son Single M 23 1878 Builder's Carter

WEBB, Arthur Son M 7 1894

Hampshire
WILTSHIRE, Fredk Boarder Single M 24 1877 Builders Labr

In 1911 it appears Sarah has died in 1906 ( we think webb nee wilson), but we have found stephen living with 2 of his sons:

CARTER, Arthur Head Single M 32 1879 Carman Steam Motor Waggon Hants Havant
NOYCE, Beatrice Housekeeper Married F 30 1881 Domestic Hants Baybridge
WEBB, Stephen Boarder Widower M 58 1853 Horse Driver Corporation Plymouth
WEBB, George Boarder Single M 23 1888 Horse Driver Coal Merchant Hnats North Stoneham
WEBB, Arthur Boarder Single M 17 1894 Horse Driver Coal Merchant Hants Swaythling

As we have our Stephen in 1911 we don't think it can be him, although it does fit well with the death of Sarah in 1906 and him remarrying in 1908. ...... so frustrating isnt it!!!!!

This is the logic we have discounted him on, but if anyone can pick fault in it please feel free.

Thanks for the help so far

In 1911 on the census he is a farm labourer. On his marriage cert in 1908 he is also a farm labourer as was his deceased father. At the time of his death in 1915 he was a brickworks labourer.
thanks

Kay Report 5 Sep 2011 23:55

Hi, Yes I found Charles in 1911 too and Celia has 3 other children living elsewhere from before this marriage! Its Stephens life before he married Celia I am trying to get my head around as I cant get any further back or make sense of the conflicting ages. My hunch is that he was older than her so perhaps pretended he wasn't as old as he really was? But I have no evidence of this and there is a 13 year age gap on their wedding cert.
thanks for your interest

I have not found him before 1911. At this point he is living with Celia Patience in Blackthorn, Bicester. I have not found him prior to this in any census and have tried to find his father John, but have no real evidence or links to go on to try to do this either. We have found some stephen webb's in prior census', but discounted them as we can find them in 1911. Thanks for your interest.

The only other piece of evidence of his existence I have is that his death was registered in Charndon, Bucks

Kay Report 5 Sep 2011 22:53

Hi, I am trying unsuccessfully to find a birth or parents for Stephen Webb born in Odiham Hants. He has documents showing differing dates of birth- his marriage cert in 1908 shows he is 48 year old (1860), his death cert in 1915 shows he is 59 years old (1856) and in the 1911 census he is 46 year old (1865). In all instances of the above he is with his wife Celia Patience so we know that these records all relate to the correct person and she is the informant of his death. I have his marriage to Celia Patience Walker and then he fathers children with her. On his marriage cert his father is registered as John Webb deceased and Stephen is classed as a widow. I am looking for any clues as this has been a line we have been trying to work for 2 years now! Any previous marriage would also be of interest or previous children.
thanks so much.
