Just spoke to my mum. Not only was great grandfather George a policeman but his father George was a policeman too. So I don't think that matches any of the above unfortunately. Not worth ordering the marriage certificate either now.
Back to square one!

Can you search the census via name and occupation to narrow it down?

Token

Token Report 27 Aug 2011 17:54

eek ok there are loads. Problem I have is Northumberland covers some central newcastle and tyneside districts and I know the family were from rural northumberland. All saints, Elswick, Tynemouth, North Shields are all too central. Hexham/Newbrough is a possibility and I think I found a census match for a george and betty in great whittington.

So ordering the marriage cert of George and Jane is probably still a good idea to get his fathers occupation and maybe a match?

Looking for my great grandfather George Bell born around 1894 in Northumberland. The problem I'm having is there are loads of George Bells! He died sometime around 1966 again in Northumberland. His son was George Gibson Bell born 26th Aug 1924. His father is also George Bell born around 1869 at best guess. No idea of his mothers name or any siblings unfortunately.
I have his marriage to Jane Ann Gibson in 1921 and I know he was a policeman and lived in the police house in Rothbury. (police records?)
I was going to order his marriage certificate but I think this would only have his age, hence still not much use?
Is there anything I can do to make sure I have the right Georges without ordering numerous certificates?
