Rebecca...Wm. was Reg. (according to Free BMD) Sept. quarter 1901 Tavistock.
Check 1901 Census to see where an Annie B Skelly was on the Census...that may help identify if and where she was in that area also if she was married or not.

OOPS-sorry- edited to read 5 euros per record, not 8!! It costs me $8 Australian dollars per record, which is why I got confused.

Margot.

Have you tried looking on the Irish Family History Foundation website?

You can search most Irish counties for free, entering in the details with a date range for the years, but when you want to get the details of a particular entry it will cost you 5 euros for each entry. You can search BMD's,and Griffith's valuations are free.If you see some promising looking entries you have to put some money into your account with them before you can access the records.

Most of the Irish counties are covered, and they are working on more .I haven't been back there recently, but it's worth a try.Unfortunately,as with the certificates, there is no guarantee that you will have the right record,so
you can waste money if you're not careful!

Good luck!!

Margot.

Indeed Annie may not have married, so SKELLY could be her maiden name after all.

Looks like I will have to request her marriage cert to Edward PAYNE to find out. It should mention widow or otherwise and SKELLY formerly ........

Many thanks to all those who have tried to help solve this question.

Rebecca

Annie my not of been married

Andrea

Andrea Report 16 Aug 2011 14:14

Dear Eringobragh1916,

No I don't have William's birth cert. Indeed I agree, if I request it, I will have Anne's maiden name. I was just trying to save on costs. I'm not trying to scrounge off others as I do have paid prescriptions to FMP, Ancestry and TheGenealogist.

I was just hoping that someone had access to Irish marriage registrations (Familysearch doesn't show a marriege of a Lawrence (all spellings) SKELLY in or around 1898 in Ireland or England). I may be wrongly assuming that her first husband was Laurence. So I need to search SKELLY and Annie Bridget marriage West Meath approx. 1898.

Do you happen to know an online service for searching Irish marriage registrations, other than Familysearch?

Many thanks,
Rebecca

Eringobragh1916 Report 16 Aug 2011 14:07

Rebecca....Do you have Williams Birth Cert...? That will give Annes maiden name...

What makes you think she married Lawrence...?

Maura

Maura Report 16 Aug 2011 14:06

Rebecca, but how do you know Lawrence Skelly's is William father?

Andrea

Andrea Report 16 Aug 2011 13:59

Dear Maura,

Indeed that's the one I found too. Marries Ellen Lennon on 18 Aug 1910 in Mullingar, West Meath and goes on to have at least 4 children.

If this is the correct Laurence it seems he served in a Liverpool Regiment previously. Perhaps he just never came home and ended up marrying again in Ireland??? Or maybe Annie and Laurence never married and he just left???

Rebecca

Dear Eringobragh1916,

My apologies. I should have stated approx. 1898!! I switched the numbers around. I'm assuming she married max 2-3yrs before the birth of William in Q3 1901.

So sorry to all for misleading you in your searches.

Regards,
Rebecca

Rebecca...Am slightly confused..
If Anne Brid.was born abt 1883 how could she have married in 1889
If Anne Brid married Lawrence Skelly how come he went on to ? marry an Ellen Lennon 1910.....

The marriage AOGG has listed above does correspond with an Ellen Lennon

Clarify please...

Dear Potty,

Thanks for your help.

It's the 1911 census which was so helpful:

States Annie + Edward married 4 years. It was easy to find the marriage reg in 1907 which states Annie's surname as SKELLY. This tied in with William SKELLY stepson on the 1911 census with Edward PAYNE as head of family. 1911 census also gave her place and year of birth.

Hope this explains.

Regards,
Rebecca

Potty Report 16 Aug 2011 12:08

familysearch has Irish marriage index for that period.

William's birth cert would give you Annie's maiden name. Actually, how do you know her first names if you don't have that cert?

Also, how do you know where Annie was born if you haven't found her on a census?

Andrea

Andrea Report 16 Aug 2011 11:13

Does anyone have access to Irish marriage registrations?

I'm looking for the marriage of:

Lawrence SKELLY
and
Annie Bridget (No surname)
born: abt 1883 Brinatown, West Meath, Ireland

Believe they married approx. 1898 (this has been edited due to a typing error!!!). First child (William) born Q3 1901 in Hampstead Heath, London, however no marriage record in England. Not able to trace the couple in the England 1901 census.

I'm interested in the brides maiden name.

Further info:
Annie Bridget went on to marry Edward Thomas PAYNE in 1907. I do not hold the marriage cert (otherwise I would no her maiden name). I haven't found a death reg for Lawrence SKELLY. From attestation papers I believe he served in the 3rd Battalion Liverpool Regiment and that he went on to marry an Ellen Lennon in 1910 in Mullingar, West Meath, Ireland. I may be totally wrong in this.

Many thanks,
Rebecca
