Yeah, I did give a fair bit of detail on how to do things - I expect you'll need that when you follow up on Mark Snr's kids.

Lots of interesting MB BMDs at:

http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

including
GROOM'S LAST NAME: BATTERS
GROOM'S GIVEN NAMES: HAROLD EDWARD
BRIDE'S LAST NAME: ELWOOD
BRIDE'S GIVEN NAMES: RAWENA SELINA DATE OF MARRIAGE: 16/12/1912
PLACE OF MARRIAGE: PLAP
REGISTRATION NUMBER: 1912,006121
REGISTRATION DATE:

GROOM'S LAST NAME: ELLWOOD
GROOM'S GIVEN NAMES: MARTY
BRIDE'S LAST NAME: NOBLE
BRIDE'S GIVEN NAMES: NELLIE DATE OF MARRIAGE: 23/12/1902
PLACE OF MARRIAGE: S NORFOLK
REGISTRATION NUMBER: 1902,001272
REGISTRATION DATE:
[1906 has Ellen & Mack Ellwood on AG - Mach on Ancestry]

One can also drill down from the LAC portal to get to the Western Land Grants database

Legal Land Description
1. Part Section Township Range Meridian
NW 22 27 26 W3

Reference:
Volume:782
Folio:259
Microfilm reel number:C-6563
Names:Mark Ellwood

The Vol# is for Feb 1918, but I don't know who Mark is - we know there's 2 in our mob, let alone others possibly out there.
Using the PO search gets
Laporte, SK - Sec.34, Twp.25, R.26, W3
Kindersley SK - Sec.10, Twp.29, R.23, W3
So 18m W of Kimberley head S 11m towards Laporte (if there were a road S).

One can also drill down from the LAC portal to get to the Soldiers of the First World War database.
(Ben's son Hazel is there - given that he was conscripted 17/5/1918, he probably didn't get to France - he might not even have gotten to England. Indeed, a marginal note indicates he got emergency conditional leave until 1919.)

There is a Mark Ellwood birth rego'ed in E Ward of Westmorland in 1845q2, 1846q2, 1847q2 - possibly all predeceased bros of our guy - I think this is him:
Births Sep 1849 (>99%)
ELLWOOD Mark E Ward 25 4[58]7

In 1901 he says his dob is 28/9/1848.

1851 has Mark pob=WES b 1846, 1848, 1850,all are in piece ho107/2439=East Ward.
In 1861, it looks like the same 3 are piece rg9/3959 - the Kirkby Stephen subdistrict of E Ward RD.
In 1871, b 1846 is in rg10/5271=Kirkby Stephen subd, and 1848 is in rg10/5272=Orton subd - no sign of 1850.
In 1901, our Mark says he immig in 1861 - in Canada census date was 14/1/1861, so he shouldn't be there by then.
There are no comprehensive nominal lists of immigrants arriving in Canada before 1865. Few such lists have survived.
In view of where our Mark wed, this looks like him in 1871:

Name:Mark Elwood
Gender:Male
Age:21
Calculated Birth Year:1850
Country or Province of Birth:England
Marital Status:Married
Ethnic Origin:English
Religion:West Meth
Census Place:03, King a, North York 43, Ontario
Page Number:49
Line Number:19
House Number:170
Family Number:173
Film Number:4396755
Library and Archives Canada Film Number:C-9964
Digital Folder Number:4396755
Image Number:00659

No free 1871 image yet, but one promised by LAC "this summer"
It looks like they were in the US 1890/1891, and the US 1890 census was 99.9% destroyed by fire.
I did look as Rowena (Batters) said in 1916 pob=USA immig=1891.

They don't give the farm addy in 1881, but Elma Twp ran down to 9 m SE of the Huron Co Line between Listowel & Monckton abt 23.5 m apart on its SW-NE axis.

Drill down from:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html
to census indexes for a set of URLs that will access the images.

1881 is at:
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e329/e008202034.pdf
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e329/e008202035.pdf

For 1916, use the LAC link, and look up district#=8 subd#=10 at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1916/001100-100.01-e.php
You want division C, images 40 & 33 (of 51)
Look up district#=4 subd#=16, you want image 9 (of 16)
Look up district#=8 subd#=12, you want image 3 (of 22)
Seems Albert might be double counted - look up district#=8 subd#=10, you want division B, image 20 (of 32)

For 1901/06/11 use the AG link - the year switch is at top right. You can click on the "split view" link to get the (saveable) images.
For 1901, note the line#=33 & the geographic info:

1901 Census of Canada Page Information
District: MB MACDONALD (#8)
Subdistrict: Norfolk (South/Sud) I-1 Page 4

Now use the LAC link to look this place up - we've already gotten the Schedule 1 (the people bit) via AG, but what we want here is the farm/house Schedule 2, namely:

http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/1901/z/z001/z000022326.pdf

This shows the farm addy as S33NW T8 R10 W1M.
The Township works like a latitude (measured from the US border), and the Range like a longitude (measured here from the meridian to the West) to define a 6 x 6 m township block. - This was divided into 36 sections.
A homesteader got a quarter-section free - he had to pay a $10 filing fee, and to get letters patent (i.e., title) he had to live on the land, build a house, and get 30 acres (I forget exactly) under crop in 3 y.
(He didn't get letters patent.)
Here, if I go to search help, I can get a map of Macdonald Electoral district (orientated so N is at right) and see where this land is

http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e034/e000835706.pdf

You can read more details abt the section numbering at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_Land_Survey

Although we don't really need it here, one can look up POs at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/post-offices/001001-100.01-e.php
and find:
Olive - Sec. 15, Twp. 8, R. 10, W(1)
MacGregor - Sec. 33, Twp. 11, R. 10, W1
Portage la Prairie - Sec. 36, Twp. 11, R. 7, W(1)
Treherne - NW 1/4 Sec. 1, Twp. 8, R. 10, WPM - 1941-10-27

So head W from Portage la Prairie 22m to Macgregor, then head S for 12m and you're there. Olive is a further 4m S and 2 m E, but doesn't exist now (the PO closed in 1916).
When you check out the above at, say, http://maps.google.com/ - you'll see the lack of a bridge over the Assiniboine R stuffs that up - one has to back up to 6m E of MacGregor, head 18m S, then a couple of m W to Treherne. Continue thru Treherne for 2.5 m (rejoining route 2 after half a m), then head N for 5.7m, then head W for 0.7 m and there's a farmhouse on your left. Whether this is the 1901 building, I don't know.
