Cherilyn Report 7 Aug 2011 03:33

PM from Mary:

I know that it is 'my man' because Joseph had a brother in Australia (William), when William was made bankrupt in the 1890's and scarpered the country back to Australia a document mentioned he had a brother Joseph in Melbourne.

so this thread has been "ticked as answered", ie solved, yet again?????????????

Hi Mary

You reply to messages on the thread exactly as you have just done ......... by typing in the "Add your reply" box. That allows everyone working on the subject to see your answer.

It is recommended that you use pms only to exchange information that you do not want in the public eye (eg, details for living relatives).

If you click on the name on a posting, then that is what sends a pm ........... instead just scroll down to the bottom and find the "add your reply" box.

I seem to be sending messages thanking people for their help as a personal message and not replying here ......
for the record, Letitia married John Whitfield in 1886, calling herself a widow.
I know that the Joseph is my man as he had a brother in Australia who was made bankrupt in the 1890's, he returned to England but a document was found in family papers saying he had a brother Joseph in Melbourne.
Kind regards, Mary
PS If anyone can tell me how I reply to a message, other than this way please let me know.

To get rid of the ticked box (which I did not tick, obviously) I have copied over the information and then deleted it (Sylvia it was the 1871 census not the 1841 that was ticked)
For background:

Age: 23 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1848
Relation: Boarder Gender: Male Where born: Workington, Cumberland, England
Civil parish: Dalton Ecclesiastical parish: St George

ED, institution, or vessel: 16 Household schedule number: 35 Piece: 4243 Folio: 157 Page Number: 9

Archibald Bell 45
Eliza Bell 38
Mary A Bell 9

Thanks

Why has patchem's posting of the 1841 Census been ticked as answered?

It was only posted to proved us, the helpers, with the information that Mary already knew and had referred to in her first posting.

The question posed by Mary has NOT been answered ................... but the green tick showing on the board gives the misleading impression that there is no need to look at further at this thread.

Please, whoever ticked patchem's posting, untick it!

thank you

How do you know for certain that the Jos in melbourne is 'your' man?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 2 Aug 2011 19:48

pm from Mary

"Lether should have read Letitia, no the family did not emigrate together. Joseph left sometime after the 1871 census, in 1881 Letitia is 'with' Joseph's nephew John who she eventually married in 1886."

Mary ........ you don't need to pm all of us individually, nice though it is to get that email!

This information is what is needed on the open thread so that others may be able to help you, if we cannot.

Yes, I had found Letitia with John in 1881!

Did she really marry him, or was it a common-law union? That is, do you have their marriage certificate? If so, how does she describe herself?

Hmm there is another Joseph WHITFIELD, who was a cutler (made/sold cutlery) and has a shop at 13 Bourke St west, Melbourne. He was there in 1881...nope, can't be him either as he was already there in the 1860s!

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 1 Aug 2011 05:47

Hi Mary

There was a Joseph WHITFIELD in Melbourne, born Cumberland, at this time. He started in Ararat and then moved to Glenorchy.

However, he died in 1891 in Glenorchy (he was a railway ganger and was hit by a train), aged 58 (so born c1833), and death shows his parents as Joseph & Ann (nee REDSHAM).

He married in Victoria in 1877 and had 1 surviving daughter. Do you have any other more specific info or do you think it is a case of mistaken identity?

"Lether" is a very strange name!

I looked on ancestry, and that really is an interpretation of the name as written

Freebmd has the following marriage:-

Marriages Sep 1868 (>99%)

Davis Letitia Sophia Cockermouth 10b 673
Whitfield Joseph Cockermouth 10b 673

As patchem has asked ......... do you know if the whole family moved down under?

Have you looked on findmypast for passenger lists?

Have you tried Search Trees on this site?

My great Grandfather JOSEPH WHITFIELD was born in 1848 in Workington, Cumberland, England to John Whitfield and his wife Mary (nee Beeby).

After the 1871 English census he disappeared but I have now found an entry in a family document for him living in Melbourne in the 1890's.

Does anyone recognise him please ?

Kind regards, Mary Thomas
