I am searching for information regarding my ancestor Henry Caddy born 1823 in Cartmel Lancashire, and is listed in the 1841 census with his family.
I can't find him in the 1851 census, but have a record of him arriving in New York U.S.A 4 Feb 1857 having travelled on the ship Empire State.
Can anybody help please with further info.
Many thanks from South Australia
Kind regards Jo.

Do you have his marriage certificate so that you know his Father's name to confirm 1841 census entry.
Also, what is it, to help us try and find him in 1851?
Thanks

Thank you for your reply. I have researched the Caddy family for sometime but had no luck with Henry born 1823 in England.
Then I discovered that he went to USA in 1857, but cannot find any further info. Is there a Free BMD equivilent in USA ?
Henry's brother Jonathon is my 4xGreatGrandfather, and this family is easy to research.
Henry has been a brick wall for so long I was hoping someone else may have some clues.
Thanks any way from South Australia Jo.

why has Ginny's posting been ticked as answered??

This gives a misleading impression that the question asked on the thread has been answered ....... and it has NOT!

Jolyon still needs the 1851 Census!!

Could whoever has clicked "tick as answered" on Ginny's thread please untick ASAP?

Otherwise, people will no longer attempt to find the information!

Note that births (or residence) in Cartmel, Lancashire, may also be shown as Ulverston, Lancashire.

PM

Thank you for your reply, I have researched Henry Caddy born 1823 in England but once he reaches USA I have not had any luck. As far as I know he did not marry in England. No luck so far,
thanks again

Sylvia, I think only the poster can tick answered? It does need un ticking though, I agree

Just a thought

He could have died soon after reaching the US and not lived to enter a census?

Im thinking this may well be Henry' fathers death. It coincides with Henry departing for the US, there could have been a reason for him leaving the country...

Might well be worth getting this death certificate to check the details

England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: 1837-1915
about Harry Caddy
Name: Harry Caddy
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1857
Registration district: Ulverston
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 8e
Page: 40_

On the 1851 census his father is with the other son Jonathan and is listed as being a land owner. Maybe 'money' was involved and could be the reason he went to the US and disapeared of the face of the earth......a name change if he ran off with all his fathers money?

Ginny

was Henry accompanied by anyone else on that passenger list?

There are some entries for "Henry Caddy" on ancestry, in Soulsby's Ulverston Advertiser.

The 1856 entry is related to letting of Green Bank, "currently occupied by My Henry Caddy"

Other entries around the same time refer to selling of cattle and farm equipment "property of Mr Henry Caddy who is declining farming"

I guess we presume that this is father Henry?

Thank you all for your replies. I have very little info for Henry Caddy born 1823. He is the son of Henry Caddy born 1784 and his sister is Sarah born 1828. I have not been able to find him on the 1851 census, however there are other Henry Caddys living in Ulverston. Sarah Caddy married William Ripley and I was not aware of the Soulsby Ulverston Advertiser the dissolving of the partnership does fit as Henry Caddy in the 1841 census is a druggist. This is a big break through. It would be good to find something for him in 1851. I was so desperate for some new info that I decided to use the message board. I am new to this sorry if I am not doing it correctly! Any other info of good ideas will be much appreciated, thanks from South Australia Jolyon

re Henry Caddy's death in 1857, his other son Jonathon had died, 'drowned on the sands of Morcombe Bay 24 Dec 1851 leaving a wife and 2 small children, Thomas [my GGrandfather who migrated to Aust] and his younger brother Henry who went on to become a Dr. I have a copy of Henry's will and his 2 grandsons, Thomas and Henry are the beneficiaries. His son Henry born 1823 is not mentioned.
I am still hoping to find him in 1851 somewhere?!
Thanks again for your help, Jolyon.

I wonder if he DID change his name, for some reason??

May I suggest that you try searching the censuses again using only his forename, birth place (Cartmel, Lancashire, OR Ulverston, Lancashire), birth year +/- 5, and see what happens?

For his forename, be aware that Henry and Harry can be interchangeable ............. try using the wild card * (which stands for 1 or more missing letters), and search for H*ry
