I've re-read the WW1 file, and even if the address in Bury is different, everything else seems to fit very well. Also noticed that no children had been born to the marriage which ties in with the 1911 census.

The WW1 record is too large to transfer over plus you cant copy and paste it.
If you want access to it then click on my name and send me your email address. I will then call it up on Ancestry and then opt for the share and then send you an invite to view it. You will be able to download it it your PC when you look at it.

It does appear to state the name for your dads father who wasnt Mr Roscoe

Andy,

I agree, it looks very likely that this may provide an answer for Lesley.

Potty,

Your concern is noted.

Lesley,

If you do decide to look at the service record here are the details of the record to look for:

British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920

Name: Robert Roscoe
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1884
Age at enlistment: 30
Birth Parish: St Georges
Birth County: L??

Regiment Name: ?? (RH & RFA)

I don't think we should post anymore details of this Army record - Lesley may not want it on a public board.

Lesley, I would usually offer to send you the Army record but this one is quite long and complicated. If you do not have access to Ancestry, it might be worth your while to take out the fortnight's free trial.

As his mumdidnt name Mr Roscoe as the father it suggests that he was born from another relationship.

Edit: Slow typing cos am on a notebook that keeps jumping around, see that more has been posted on that front.

Hi Jonesey.

Yes we are. I've just gone through the service record. A cracking read, one of the best I've seen. I do hope it is the same family Lesley is looking for, it answers a lot of questions.

His army records are on Ancestry and it seems that when he joined, he enlisted as a 'single' man !!

His wife then wrote to the army about this..................

I am reading through them and will report back - it takes a while !!

There are some interesting WW1 service records which appear to relate to the above Robert Roscoe. Amongst them is a letter (Unfortunately undated) indicating that his wife left him 4 years earlier to live with another man by whom she has now had a child. Robert Roscoe produced a birth certificate of the child with no fathers name indicated on it. The man Florence is co-habiting with is known as Joseph Smethurst (A butcher serving in the ASC).

EDIT: Snap Andrew we are obviously working along the same lines.

Andrew Report 28 Jul 2011 14:19

IF this is correct family in 1911 census, their is an interesting WW1 history, with detail of family and a letter from Florence. The address on sign up papers is the same as the census.

Lesley, what address is quoted on the birth cert you have? We may be able to tie things together. Quoted also is 26 Union Square Bury.
