I don't know its current status, but back around 1800, Alston was in the diocese of Durham. You can browse the (unindexed) Durham BTs via:

hi
The first john you had, dying in 1837 is a cousin, that francis is son of one of brothers of francis. Mine i have discovered today is born in 1800, but was born just over border in scotland, canonbie, dumfrieshire, to francis and sarah nee graham. Francis is son of charles born in 1778 in alston. Yes, thats my mary waslh/hargreaves marrying my john mcintosh, and yes, his first wife was isabella readfearn who died in 1832 in altham. John macintosh had a number of kids with isabella before having one, also named isabella with his new wife marywalsh/hargreaves, in 1838/1837. She went on to marry a james law. its a very complicated family. But i have lost him after 1837 cos i have no sign of him on any census and not with mary. I take with a pinch of salt that he was alive at weddings of his kids, they never say deceased, but wheres he vanished to then???
im very chuffed at minute because someone has found birth of my john. i never expected he would be only child of francis and sarah to be born in scotland, though with a name like macintosh i should not be surprised.
thanks a million for all your help with this complicated and mysterious family. Im still wondering whateve rhappened to charles and margaret. Maybe charles went back to scotland then???

No Shirley havent found either of them...and yes I think you may be right about Charles being the first in the area which is why I looked way back when to see if I could find an earlier McIntosh (variations)...of course you will have Margarets history going back to the dark ages..!!
I will continue to have a persue around.

Have you spotted a death for any of them?? i think charles was the first macintosh in the area, so he was probably from scotland. its like they have disapeared from the face of the earth, just like john who ive lost in altham after 1837. I think john is either charles and margarets son born before 1800 or maybe francis's and sarahs son born maybe in alston around 1800.?

Can anyone help me find the deaths of charles macintosh and his wife margaret nee teasdale maybe around alston in cumbria?? Last spotted in 1793 with death of possibly youngest son charles. Think they married in arthuret. In 1774. Charles was born in 1750 but we dont know where, could possibly be scotland???? Children of couple included sarah, 1775, hannah, 1776, francis, 1778(who moved to great harwood in lancashire by around 1800 ish), james, 1781, hannah 2, 1783, john 1786(who died same year), william, 1789, and margaret , 1791. An idea of where charles was born would be brilliant but im not holding out much hope for that one, but it would point to scotland and i do here inverness , but again, no proof on that.
