Find Ancestors

I am trying to find the parents of Maria, James, Richard and Francis Butler.

My grandmother was born in Londonderry in 1908. Her mother was Mary Morrison nee Butler dob 1886. Her mother was Maria Butler dob 1868. I know that she had 3 brothers James, Richard and Francis. James and Francis were gardners. James was married to Mary and Richard was married to Roseann and they had 10 children. They were living in Glasgow Terrace on the 1911 census.
Francis and Maria never married. They lived in Glenbrook Terrace on the 1901 and 1911 census.

I have checked 1911 and James and Mary and Edward are living with Daniel and "May" Morrison..their youngest child is Kathleen..no Mary b 1908 listed.
James is till listed as is Mary as unmarried.

Francis Butler is at 2.3 Glasgow St.married to a Mary......
Richard as you say was living Glasgow Tce.

I cannot locate any other Butlers living Glenbrook Tce which correspond to your Butler info. Richard and Roseann's youngest b 1908 is named Mary..???

Can you find out if James (1901 and 1911) was ever married as I surely cant figure out who Mary aged 15 and Edward aged 4 belong to.... (1901)..Edward shows up 1911 aged 14 still with them.

Wonder if this is John (1851) Census Extract.

Also down the St.is a Margaret Butler (nee Kyle) with son John Butler...and Margarets family.

With father's James

John married Anne McIlhinny 6th Feb 1872 Long Tower (St Columb) Roman Catholic Church

Richard married Rose Ann O'Donnell 22nd April 1883 L/derry R.C.

Francis married a Mary Okane 11th April 1903 L/Derry R.C.

William married Jane Mc Garrigle 18th April 1897 L/Derry R.C.

There no marriages for James or Maria that fit, they both say on the censuses that they weren't married.

Mary Butler married Daniel Morrison 1st January 1904 LDerry R.C. her father was a William

Then that would account for the Census (1911) showing James as "Uncle G Law"..couldnt work out what it meant..."Great Uncle" in Law...still doesnt account for who wee Edward belonged to....


William Butler (Mary's father) therefore had to be the Nephew of James and Margaret .

Sure and I am getting more confused by the second...

According to the 1901 census, Mary age 15 & Edward aged 4 are down as son & daughter. Now neither James or Maria where married, according to Rhian Mary's mother was a Maria. I have found a birth for a Mary 1886, mother Maria Butler, father a William , have to pay to find father's surname. There's also a birth for Edward 1897 mother Maria Butler father's a Michael. Maria could of had 2 children out of wedlock.

OMG!!! thanks everyone.....came home from work to this....great...need to get my head around it all. The dates are a bit off but will recheck (my granny was never truthful with her dob!) I know the children who are causing the confusion on the 1901 census. Mary Butler (15) was my g grandmother, the daughter of Maria Butler (who wasn't married). I think Edward is the son of Richard and Roseanne, they are listed as having 9 children still living on the 1911 census.
Taken me a while to get back on as I was asleep while you were all busy beavering away on the thread.....I live in Australia :o)
The dates I have are as follows:

Francis 1870

Given my grandmother's habit of taking 4 years off the DOB, the dates may fit with the dates you have found. Will ring my mam later. I was so excited to get the posts I was wanting to ring her now....but it's only 5am and I don't think she would be too pleased!
