Actually, I think the first time I ever saw the term was in one of your posts, and I've been using the net - and unwittingly drilling down - for about 20 years.

OK Janey - I hadn't checked that AG had changed. Specifically, I didn't realize it was now possible to actually save the image in the split view window.

If you've "I've already looked them up and found them" -- why do you need to go through the rigamarole of finding them at collectionscanada?

But maybe you could explain the process at collectionscanada more simply sometimes? I'm betting 9 out of 10 people here don't have a clue what "drill down" means, or what some of the shorthands you use stand for. ;)

OK, JC, so here's the AG route - assuming I've already looked them up and found them where I said (1911)

I go to AG - my bookmark is to the 1901 page.
I click on 1911, then BC, then Victoria, then ED11, then the page 5 "pdf" in the view LAC image column. It opens up the URL

As to why I would want to use LAC directly - well, via AG, you don't normally get to see 1901 Schedule 2, so you never know their street or farm addy. You don't normally get to see the entire 1851/52 census so you don't know how many tallow candles they made, etc., and too bad if they lived in NS since AG doesn't cover that, even if it's 70% lost.

Also, for 1881-91 free images, you do have to use LAC as there's no alternative.

Re colons - yeah, I keep forgetting. Well, I've firm ideas on GR fixing it quickly, eh.

At Automatedgenealogy, you have to start with a surname and province for 1911, but when you get results you can click on "All" and get the whole country.

mgnv, your instructions work when you know who/where you're looking for! When the "where" is what you're trying to find out, not so well.

Frankly, I'm sorry, but I've never understood the need for the complex search at collectionscanada (which, again, unless I'm mistaken, only works if you know where you're looking).

Automatedgenealogy provides all the info needed, including the original image. Of course, the horrible quality of the original entries and the scans and then the transcriptions mean that sometimes you can't find what is there, since the fuzzy search function is very poor.


With all the complex urls and instructions you post, you're going to have to pay attention to the html glitch that has been inflicted on us:

when you end a line in a colon, you have to add a space (space bar) after it before making the hard line (enter key) or the colon combines with the pointybracket in the html tag for the hard return to create an idiotface, as you see in your posts above.

Pamela - not so. You can do that via the AG link, and at the top of the transcribed page see something like:

You can then look this up on the LAC link (noting it's subdistrict 11)


However, you're sort of right re 1916, which is why I gave alternative instructions for finding Marian there.

It is not possible to search the Canadian 1911 census by family surname. It is necessary to know either the town or province.

A good place to start for Canadian records is the LAC gateway:

Note you should also recheck Margee's URL.
The b & d of wee Charles is there, but not the b of Marian that I can see, although her marr to Percy Baragar is there.

Remember to use LAC's wild card in 1891 - look up say edith kingst*

Could some kind person possibly check the Canadian census for me please?

I have just had an alert from Ancestry (English 1901 census, 1906 & 1911 Canadian census) about a family I am researching.

The Bush & Kingston families originated in England and emigrated to Winnipeg around 1880. Charles Kingston (Kingstone) (b 1857) married Sarah J K Bush in Winnipeg in 1879.
They had 2 daughters Edith E born 1884 in Winnipeg, Canada & Lillian K born 1897 also in Winnipeg, Canada. By the 1901 census they were back living in Redcar, England. BUT in 1906 & 1911 they had returned to Canada!
