Hi Susan,
I was hoping to pick up a birth registration for him on Family Search, unfortunately I couldn't see one.
May I ask who your father in law married, I'm hoping I may pick up some Cotterills in the same area and be able to work from them??

HiBatMansDaughter My father in law married a Minnie Ward in Burnley Lancashire, we are in contact with all the family living in Burnley at the moment, all birth/marriage certificates etc. have gone missing and unfortunately all the older family members that may have had information are now longer with us, the problem seems to be my husbands grandparents were born in Ireland, trying to find their births and marriages etc. Regards Susan

Hi Susan,
I presume you have no names for your Husbands Grandparents? If so the marriage certificate would be the only way forward.
Can your hubby remember any cousins from this side of the Cotterill family?

This seems to be the only other marriage in that area around that time;
Surname First name(s) Mother/Spouse/Age District Vol Page
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Mar 1933 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cotterill Florence M Credland Burnley 8e 311 Credland Charles S Cotterill Burnley 8e 311
Now looking around I think Florences middle name was Mabel..... I have possibly found her death but no birth??

Hi Susan,
I found this;
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Jun 1911 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cotterall Esther Burnley 8e 137
BUT.. I then found this; Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Mar 1914 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COTTERALL John J Kenyon Burnley 8e 278
There is a marriage in Blackburn for George Cotterall to Sarah Kenyon before 1900........ and just thinking out aloud.... could your F I Laws birth year been out by 1 year??? It happens.

HI BatMansDaughter My father in laws birth could be +/- a couple of years, he definitely married Minnie Ward in Burnley in 1940. Interesting Esthers surname spelling is slightly different from the others, may be route worth looking into, my husband remembers his parents going to a funeral when he was in his early teens, looks like it was Esthers. My husband has no recollection of cousins from his fathers side of the family, he also has never heard of a Charles Cotterill. Regards Susan

Hi BatMansDaughter Many thanks for all your help, now certain George Cotterall and Sarah Kenyon were my husbands grandparents, found father in laws birth with the same surname spelling, now puzzled on two points how Ireland came into the mix and how the surname changed from Cotterall to Cotterill, very strange. Anyway thanks to you hopefully we can now continue the family line back. Once again very many thanks Regards Susan
