I thought it would be easy, just look on FreeBMD to see who Leah Ladds married but i see she didn't marry until 1917 and married Charles T. Betts. So was she previously married or is Ladds her maiden name?

Curious! It shows surname Geeney and mother's maiden name Ladds.

Births Sep 1911 (>99%)

GEENEY Nellie Ladds Birmingham 6d 182

But why did she marry in 1917 using surname Ladds if she was previously married?

There doesn't seem to be a marriage between a Geeney and a Ladds.

I think you're going to have to buy Nellie's birth certificate to get father's name.

Thank you Margee and Vera, yes she was married before to Geeney who we think died in the war and then to Charles Betts. Her mom being Leah Ladds and Ladds is her maiden name. That`s why i cant find anything about his Christen name and where to go from there.

I can't see a death of a Geeney in WW1 on the Commonwealth War Graves site.

The 1901 census has a William & Sarah GEENEY in Blackburn, Lancs with 3 young children. William (34) was born in Ireland. Sarah was 39.

The only other GEENEY is a Fakilsab Adbul GEENEY, 27, born East India and living in Durham.

1911 Wm & Sarah are still in Blackburn, Lancs. It appears they died in 1927 & 1934 respectively.

If the mother married Betts as LADDS.....it's unlikely in the extreme that she was married to Nellie's father.

As the child was registered as Geeney, the father's details will be on the birth cert.

His 'death' is quite possibly a fabrication.

Have you traced Leah on 1911 census?

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 28 Apr 2011 15:27

I can't see a Leah Ladds on the 1911 census. There's a Leah Gennoy b.1884 Birmingham - wife of Thomas Gennoy b.1882 Birmingham.

He's a machet grinder and she's a pressworker.

No children. Under "completed years of marriage" it says "none". Can't see any marriage registration for them though.

Clearly, this name isn't Geeney, it's just the closest I can see.

If you're going to order Nellie's birth certificate - use GRO.gov.uk It's the cheapest place to use, at £9.25
