Hi there, is there anyone out there who can find these for me on the 1911, the only census I have found them on is the 1901, living in Manchester, with daughter Feiga aged 1, they were both born in Russia (well, Beila was born in Lithuania, but was occupied by Russia at the time). Harry was born in 1871 and Beila in 1875 or thereabouts. She was a waterproof garment machinist. I would be so grateful if anyone could find these for me. Oh, and I can't find the birth of Feiga on the FreeBMD or Ancestry either, or a marriage for the couple ..... frustrated isn't the word!!! |

These are the only people transcribed as Ditman in the 1911 census: |

No sign of them at all as far as I can see. It looks as though they may either emigrated or perhaps changed their names. |

Thank you for that ... Polly, it's very annoying isn't it ... I have tried all different spellings of Ditman too, because sometimes I have seen it spelt Dittmann, and I have looked at the image of the 1901 and it is defo Feiga, plus, Beila's mum was called Feiga which makes sense. So difficult with these Eastern European names, a transcribers nightmare!! Thank you Jonesey ... that is the family, but the daughter transcribed wrongly, you see, this is the problem ... I just thought a fresh look, somebody else's ideas ... you know |

Looks as though Ditman surname is of German origin. Russian surnames usually construed to indicate "son or daughter of". |

Ok, thanks Perchino ... Beila was my grandfather's sister, and they were born in Lithuania ... their surname was Berk ... also of German origin I believe ... but some in the family called themselves Berkovich ... son of Berk?? I don't know where Harry Ditman originated, maybe Lithuania as well, it is a possibility |

"vich* is son of and "skaya" daughter of. I think it is a case of more investigation into the origins of the surnames will give you better clues. Will have a look at Berkovich. |

Well, my family were Jewish, and my grandfather's brother was called Abraham!! Haha, as for army deserters, could well have been, I know they escaped the 'pogroms' of the 1880s, and ended up in France, so the family story goes, my great uncle went to America and my grandfather came here to London. My cousin and I have been searching and searching for the rest of the family for years, to no avail, but recently have found this Ditman family living in Manchester, don't know if Beila is my Beila, but the daughter's name Feiga was her mother's name, so we are trying to follow the lead. |

There was an area in Central Europe called Galicia (not to be confused with the one in Spain) which had a strong Jewish influence and I have found many of the surnames to originate from there. Families left the area searching for work. Will have a look in the next twenty four hours. |

Probably not your Beila but the age would be about right so you never know. No other Dittmann on the passenger list. |

Both Bercovich and Dittman surnames are showing as having links back into Galicia. Is Dittman the Jewish form of Ditman which would explain why you have come across variants of the name? |
