Thomas Edward Sadler is my mystery man. He is variously said to have been born on India, or Sunderland according to his marriage certifiates. He was a Marine Engineer but in 1911 was running pub called the Foresters Arm at 121 Salmons Lane, Limehouse. A living member of my family, a nephew and my brother, who saw him shortly before he died, (just before I was born), and who knew him well, insists he was Anglo Indian. Family legend has always said he was born in India, and his father Thomas Sadler, a Master Mariner, is understood to have died at sea en route from India to England, possibly aboard s/s Colombo, (off no 68655) on 8/12/1874. His second wife Frances Frater, was my Godmother and maternal Aunt, and most of my information comes from her. Sadly they were childless but I was taken over as a substitute when young. (Not sure my Mother was too pleased). |

Family search is playing up at the moment, but a John Walter Sadler is showing up as a son of a Thomas Sadler and a Caroline - didn't get the year when FS went funny on me. |

Thank you so much for your replies. Kacinta especially has helped to support my family story and remove some of the doubt I was beginning to have. The information supports all that I was told by those family members who knew Tom personally. I just wish I had been born early enough to have known him, I gather he was quite a character. He was also described as a Guarantee Chief Engineer, meaning he took new ships out on their first voyages to ensure the engines worked properly. At last a gap has been filled and I just wish I has found this site sooner. |

Just checked with my much older brother who was a favourite of Tom Sadler. He confirms that there was a younger brother but not sure of his name, but Walter rang a bell! Being a lot older than me he does not always recall details I ask him about. But he clearly remembers Tom on his death bed, who had specially asked to see him. |
