I have an Edward Lord born C1824 Halifax Yorkshire (2x Great Grandfather) He Married Elizabeth Lord Before 1851. I can't find him in 1861 Census, however have found Him in 1871 as a boarder, widowed, no occupation and pace of birth has an N. I have found Elizabeth on a separate 1871 Census as Married and Wife with their children, James Edward, David, John Hy, William and Woodhead. I have also found Edward on the 1881 Census as an inmate at the Halifax Union Workhouse as an inmate. I am hoping to get some feedback as to what may have happened...Thank you sooo much
Kind Regards to all
Jo

Jonesey Report 9 Apr 2011 18:29

It seems strange that his birthplace and occupation (Wiredrawer) are both clearly stated on the 1851 and 1881 census records but the 1871 entry you found that Edward Lord is shown with no occupation and no known birthplace. If it is your Edward perhaps he had not divulged those details to the head of the household who presumably would have been the one who gave the information to the census enumerator.

It looks as though he died in Halifax at the beginning of 1891. Have you obtained a copy of his death certificate to see where exactly he died, what of, and who registered his death?

Name: Edward Lord

Year of Registration: 1891
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar

Jonesey might be right about that death as Elizabeth is widowed on 1891 census.

Yes he died in 1891, I have ordered death cert. but am wondering why he was listed as a boarder in 1871 census and it also shows him as widower then next census he is an inmate in the Union Workhouse. Is there a way to find out why and how he ended up there.

thanks all

information on the death certificate might help

I think we have discussed this before, on another thread .......... but the Workhouse was also often the only place where there was a hospital, so he might have been an inmate in the hospital.

I also seriously wonder whether you have in fact got TWO Edward Lord's, and have got them confused.

I would presume that in 1871 he had stopped at the Spread Eagle in the centre of Halifax town, ????too drunk to go home???-jl

I am alway wary if I see a gap in the children's ages. I cannot find Woodhead Lord registered although the rest of the children are. Could it be that this child might not be Edwards and that is why he isn't at home.?-jl

In 1881, Woodhead Lord says he was born ca 1858; in 1891 it's ca 1860; and in 1901, it's 1858 again!

do you think he wasn't sure of his age?!

what about this registration????

Births Dec 1859 (>99%)

On the image (handwritten) it is:-

Lord, Woodhead Halifax, vol 9a page 390

so it's the registration we're looking for.

I've sent in an entry correction

Interestingly, one of the Public Family Trees on ancestry, seems to be descended from Woodhead

........... and says that William Lord (age 16 in 1871) was a half-brother to the other children.

Elizabeth Lord is shown as his mother, with no father.

It's a bit of a mystery, but isn't always. I have ordered certificates to hopefully get more details to help sort out. According to my Mom Woodhead was born 17 Sep 1959. I think I will order another for Woodhead. Interesting about William as well.

Thanks all this is great

Cheers

Janet, Tell me more about your theory of stoping at the Spread Eagle and being too Drunk to go home in 1871.

Janet

Janet Report 11 Apr 2011 12:43

On the 1871 census for Edward Lord the address shown is the Spread Eagle .This is adjoining the Woolshops which are situated at the side of the Piece Hall. This is an 18th Century construction which is still in Halifax to this day. The Spread Eagle is the public house and according to the internet was at number 7, because I cannot see the previous page on the census I cannot verify the number. My thoughts are that if this man still lived at home in Lister Lane which leads out of the town, what would make him stay the night in the centre of Halifax. Either he doesn't live at home in the first place, or that he was too drunk to go home. These are only my thoughts, not gospel. Also Sylvia has found the birth of Woodhead which I couldn't find.- jl
