Antony Report 7 Apr 2011 16:23

I have become stuck with my BENTLEY family again & was wondering whether someone could possibly help out.

First up, the information which I can provide.

The following births in the IGI are probably baptisms & they are all children of William & Jane BENTLEY (‘Hope Independent or Congregational, Shelton, Staffordshire’ (Batch No.: C084511, Dates 1809 - 1837, Source Call No.: 0825395 (RG4 2723), Printout Call No.: 1037059)).

William – born 27th August 1810
Abner – born 18th March 1812
James – born 21st February 1814
William – born 27th November 1815
Maria – born 8th September 1817
Margaret – born 11th October 1819
Henry – born 16th October 1821

The 1841 census for Etruria, Shelton, Stoke on Trent
Jane BENTLEY 60
William BENTLEY 25 Pottery Painter
Margaret BENTLEY 20 Pottery Burnisher
Henry BENTLEY 15 Pottery Presser Apprentice
Titus BENTLEY 10 Pottery Presser Apprentice

Jane's husband had died in 1839:-
William BENTLEY died 17th February 1839 at Etruria, Shelton, aged 55, Platemaker, Cause of death: Disease of the lungs, registered by Titus BENTLEY, present at the death, resident at Etruria, Shelton on 19th February 1839.

Jane died in 1845:-
Jane BENTLEY died 9th June 1845 at Mill Street, Hanley, aged 64, Widow of William BENTLEY a Potter, Cause of death: Asthma, registered by John BATE, present at the death, resident at Piccadilly, Shelton on 16th June 1845.

In 1839 William’s son Abner BENTLEY married Marinda Louisa COLCLOUGH.
In 1845 William’s son Henry BENTLEY married Eliza MILLINGTON.
In 1849 William’s son Titus BENTLEY married Emma CHETWYND.
I can trace these 3 families further.

Tracing their elder brothers James & William I think may be a bit difficult due to the names being quite common.

I have been unable to find a marriage or death for Margaret which is very puzzling. The marriage on Freebmd in 1846 is the daughter of Isaac so not the correct Margaret.

In 1839 William’s daughter Maria BENTLEY married Hugh NORTHWOOD. This is the information from the marriage certificate:-

01/07/1839, St. George’s Church, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford, Maria BENTLEY, of age, spinster, living in Newcastle, daughter of William BENTLEY, Potter, married Hugh NORTHWOOD, of age, bachelor, Clerk, living in Newcastle, son of William NORTHWOOD, Shoemaker. The marriage was witnessed by Maria's brother Abner BENTLEY & Elizabeth NORTHWOOD.

Incidentally, Maria was a witness at her brother Henry's marriage (as Maria NORTHWOOD).

This is Hugh & Maria on the 1841 census:-

Mill Street, Shelton, Stoke upon Trent
Hugh NORTHWOOD 20 Book Keeper Staffordshire
Maria NORTHWOOD 20 Staffordshire
Susanna NORTHWOOD 1 Staffordshire

After that Hugh & Maria vanish. I can't find them on any further census so I believe they may have emigrated. As Margaret also vanished perhaps she went with them.

Perhaps someone could be kind enough to help with solving what happened to Hugh & Maria & also to Margaret. Help with finding anything about the brothers William & James would also be gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance,
Tony

Wow, that was a quick response. It looks like Hugh & Maria named their daughter after Hugh's mother.

I am impressed! Thankyou for the help so far. The daughter on the 1880 census must presumably have been born after Alice E. as she would have been aged 20 in 1880. I assume that 7/12 implies 7 months?

Antony Report 7 Apr 2011 17:24

When Hugh & his family arrived in Boston in 1849 does it say who else was with him & which ship he sailed on?

I think I have found the births for his first 3 children:-

Susanna Margaret NORTHWOOD birth Mar Q 1840 Wolstanton 17 297

Jane Bentley NORTHWOOD birth Sep Q 1843 Stoke upon Trent 17 168

Mary NORTHWOOD birth Mar Q 1845 Stoke upon Trent 17 191

These may also be his children:-

William Mortab(eo)y NORTHWOOD birth Sep Q 1846 Stoke upon Trent 17 183

Ellenor Scoumerton NORTHWOOD birth Jun Q 1848 Stoke upon Trent 17 201

I've just checked out the 1870 census on Ancestry:-

1870 Census.
Free Inhabitants in 10th Ward, Pittsburgh in the County of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania
Name Age Occupation Where born
Hugh NORTHWOOD 50 Clerk in 20h China Store England
Maria NORTHWOOD 51 No Occupation England
William G. NORTHWOOD 14 Attending School Pennsylvania
Alice E. NORTHWOOD 10 Attending School Pennsylvania
Emma W. NORTHWOOD 8 Attending School Pennsylvania

The 18 year old daughter on the 1880 census is probably the above Emma W.

I can't find the family on the 1850 census but as they had only arrived in 1849 they may not have been questioned?

I'd still like to know who travelled to the US. Perhaps Hugh travelled on his own in 1849 & Maria travelled with the rest of the family later.

Can anyone please help?

Hi Antony,

It does appear that Hugh traveled on his own-on board the Suffolk.

I can't seem to pinpoint Maria and children coming over, though.

Thanks Maureen. That is strange.

Is there a good website for researching passenger lists to the US?

Also is there an American equivalent of the Freebmd website where it's possible to trace the births, deaths & marriages.

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony,

Other than Ancestry,I can't think of a good site for ships lists at that time.

BMDs in the US are done state by state and each one has its own rules. There isn't a comprehensive database. Pennsylvania isn't well represented on the new Family Search site, alas. I see a few Northwood christenings, etc. on the old Family Search site, but they don't seem to give much info.
