John Robert & George Thomas Young - brothers

Lynne From Up North !!

Lynne From Up North !! Report 23 Mar 2011 18:50

I'm hoping that someone can help with this puzzle.

I have two gentlemen John Robert Young born c1914 and George Thomas Young born c1919 - both of which lost their lives whilst serving in the Australian Infantry during World War II.

I have found on CWGC the memorials for them which show that John Thomas Young and Jessie Young were their parents - see below.

My puzzle is, were both John Robert and George Thomas born in Australia? Or were they born in England and emmigrated to Australia with their mother at a time after their father died in England. I have searched the listings for passengers travelling to Australia, but unfortunately haven't been able to find them.

Name: YOUNG, JOHN ROBERT
Initials: J R
Nationality: Australian
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Australian Infantry
Unit Text: A.I.F. 2/3 Bn.
Age: 28
Date of Death: 28/10/1942
Service No: NX5001
Additional information: Son of John Thomas Young and Jessie Young, of Petersham, New South Wales.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: B7. F. 22.
Cemetery: PORT MORESBY (BOMANA) WAR CEMETERY

Name: YOUNG, GEORGE THOMAS
Initials: G T
Nationality: Australian
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Australian Infantry
Unit Text: A.I.F. 2/17 Bn.
Age: 22
Date of Death: 14/04/1941
Service No: NX18166
Additional information: Son of John Thomas Young and Jessie Young, of Petersham, New South Wales, Australia.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 3. J. 9.
Cemetery: TOBRUK WAR CEMETERY

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Lynne

Have you looked for the marriage for the parents on FreeBMD and established when their father died

Would their memorial state the father and mother were both of Petersham if dad had passed away before them

I'm unsure whether this would be the correct family!!

I think I will have to go back to the drawing board - by checking again what I already have and verify through ancestry! I may have missed something obvious.

I think the emigration is correct. The NAA Recordsearch site shows thier birthplaces and dates:

YOUNG JOHN ROBERT : Service Number - NX5001 : Date of birth - 28 Aug 1914 : Place of birth - WOOLWICH ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - MARRICKVILLE NSW : Next of Kin - YOUNG JESSIE

The fact that Jessie is nok makes me think the father was decd.

AND this one matches the above birth in Fife:

YOUNG GEORGE THOMAS : Service Number - NX18166 : Date of birth - 18 Dec 1918 : Place of birth - FIFESHIRE SCOTLAND : Place of enlistment - PADDINGTON NSW : Next of Kin - YOUNG J

Interesting, note this marriage in Petersham:

25293/1951 YOUNG JAMES SAMUEL [married] SIDAWAY NANCY MILLICENT PETERSHAM

This death looks a good match but he I found his death notice and he was aged 57 years and his wife was Alberta. Just to rule hin out. Big coincidence tho!

7469/1953 YOUNG SAMUEL JAMES JOHN THOMAS JESSIE SYDNEY

Thanks Cherilyn,

Hopefully the info you have supplied above, with regards to the births of John and George will help me tie all the other pieces together.
