I see your mother was born 1930 in Manchester. If you are looking for a death for your grandfather there is this, but after her marriage:

Name: John B Scothern
Death Registration Month/Year: 1952
Age at death (estimated): 78
Registration district: Mansfield
Inferred County: Nottinghamshire
Volume: 3c
Page: 103

In passing, this person must be related somehow!

Name: John Bowmar Scothern
Year of Registration: 1867
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Sheffield
County: South Yorkshire, Yorkshire - West Riding
Volume: 9c

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1880

Theresa Scothorn 21
John H R Scothorn 4 Months

No help with your immediate problem, I know.

If you can't find a marriage for your grandparents, you have no way of knowing when they were born, and therefore, no way of looking for their deaths

Flick

Flick Report 22 Mar 2011 16:13

If any marriage had been found, the info would have been posted.

BUT.........until we know for certain that Miss Quirk married Mr Scothern, we can't even be sure which surname to search under.

SO...............find the 'marriage'............and then we can go from there.

Also....if you're going to worry about slight differences in spelling, you're going to get nowhere............

As I said.....didn't you notice? - I was 'thinking aloud'!

David

Nowhere on a birth cert in England and Wales is there anything to say that the parents are married

And I wasn't suggesting you were being rude........so no worries there!

Jan

That's the marriage I posted for which I found 1901.................so we're both thinking aloud on the same theme..........lol!
