"William John Gardiner born 26.11.1979 and died 10.10.1964."

That was a good trick (lol).

I presume that you have entered one of the dates incorrectly.

I was given these dates by my father. May be the birth date was 1878 as he was 86 when he died. Thanks for your help

Thanks again. The death seems right but I know he was bor on 26th November no birth doesn't seem correct. Found him on 1881 census as Wm. Jno Gardiner living with his mother Susan

Margaret

Margaret Report 21 Mar 2011 09:20

Yes the 1901 census is the correct one. Thank you

Jonesey Report 21 Mar 2011 09:22

Margaret,

People have up to 6 weeks after the event to register a birth so a birth on 26/11/1879 could quite legitimately and legally be registered in early January 1880.

Thank you for all your help. Didn't realise you had six weeks to register a birth. 1911 census is correct too as Clarence was my father and the child who died was only three days old.

pm from Margaret:

I have found the marriage certificate now and it states the following
Marriage January 27th 1877 The Parish Church Walton on the Hill Everton. Ages shown as full.
James's father was also James Gardiner a deceased confectioner
Susan's father was Charles a deceased mariner.
I still cannot get further back but I am going to Liverpool next week to search the archives and tour the cemeteries.

James Gardiner Snr. died at Abercromby Square on 5th May 1891.
He left a Will + Codicil which was 'proved' on 31st July at Liverpool.
His 'personal estate' totalled £1,774. 16s 6d.

It 'might' contain some useful information - have a look to see if you can trace it.
National Archives site perhaps?

P.S. - It might interest you to know that in today's value that would equate to around £157675.00

Hi Margaret - I have found you a 'Gem'.........

A notice was placed in the Liverpool Daily Post and the Echo on 7th May.
It read:

Gardiner, May 5th at his residence 16a Abercromby Square, in his 79th year,
James Gardiner. Will be interred at Walton Church on Saturday next the 9th inst.
At 11.30. No flowers. No cards.

Check out this website - it will give you lots more to look at while you are in Liverpool.
Hope I am not to late with the info.
