I had the same problems with the Head familt. William Head is my ancestor too. He was actully born William Mattinson and the wife and children took the same name until the 1870's! Look at the census' from 1851 .1861 and 1871 Great puzzle as to why change of name but I wrote a letter to the Editor of WHo Do you think You Are Magazine and it featured as a full length article in August 2008. I have copies of marriage and death certs for william and Margaret if you contact me. Quite a sad story attached to this family Will also let you have copy of article. I'm an o'a'p' and would prefer to use Royal Mail if poss.Hope to make contact. Irene |

Irene, I doubt that AuntieGillie is still checking this old thread. I suggest you click on her name and send her a personal message. Also you should remove your email address from your post for your own security. |

The maiden name will be still be on the child's birth certificate even though they don't show up on the index until after 1911. |

Mike - I tried FreeBMD first, but it's before the point at which mothers maiden name was recorded. |

There's a Margaret Tyrer on the 1851 census in Preston, the right age. Parents are John & Elizabeth Tyrer. She's 5 years older than the next child which made me wonder if she was an illegitimate child of the mother before she was married and was born a Braithwaite and then taken stepfather's name. Couldn't find a marriage though to substantiate my theory. |

You could always check out the children's birth certificates for confirmation of mother's name. |

Mike - There was a Margaret Braithwaite born Preston in 1839, so the age match is looking OK. |
