On the Ellis Island site the Arthur Norman who arrived in 1905 was going to join cousin Dr. William Norman, Plymouth, Latrobe, California.

As a final try I looked at all Arthur's in 1911 who had been born in Sidcup in 1904/5. If his parents did both die between 1904 and 1911 then I hoped that he might show up in an institution or perhaps under a different surname. Unfortunately only 2 possibilities showed up as Just Arthur, no Arthur John's. I checked birth records and neither could be Arthur John I'm afraid.

I have checked for the deaths of his parents between 1904~1911 but nothing concrete shows up. Also checked for possible other marriages for both parents but once again nothing shows up.

All very frustrating when you have someone's actual birth certificate to hand.

Did he ever mention being abroad anywhere?

Complete shot in the dark but in 1910 a family with the name Norman went to Canada. The father's name was Arthur, born in England, the mother only shown as Mrs unfortunately, born in India. Amongst their children was an Arthur J who is shown as being born in England. Arthur J's age is out by 3 years but stranger things have happened. They had several other children with them, all born in Scotland.

Who did Arthur John Marry?

normandee

normandee Report 15 Mar 2011 15:40

Yes, Jonesey, realized that after the fact. I had typed in the wrong name!
I've edited it.

My knowledge of Kent is not that good. In 1911 there is a Stanhope road in Foots Cray parish, That is in the Bromley registration district. Would that be the same place as Stanhope Road, Sidcup?

Unfortunately if it is it probably won't help the search much as there were 16 census entries for that road in 1911 and all were numbered premises rather than named.

normandee

normandee Report 15 Mar 2011 15:23

found that one too, do know they lived 'Penrith' stanhope road, sidcup in 1904 as that was where young Arthur j was born

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 15 Mar 2011 15:19

Not doing too well I'm afraid.

I cannot find young Arthur in 1911, neither can I spot an older Arthur who is a commercial traveller in the 1901 or 1911 census.

There does not appear to be an Arthur Norman/Alice Wardle marriage 1880~1911. The only Arthur Edward Norman marriage to an Alice is one in Medway in 1904:

Marriages Mar 1904 (>99%)
Fortescue Zoe Daisy H F Medway 2a 873
HAWKINS Henry George Medway 2a 873
Norman Arthur Edward Medway 2a 873
Sutton Alice Jane Medway 2a 873

As you see the Alice is shown as Alice Sutton. There does not appear to be an Alice Wardle marriage to a Sutton which might have explained a name shift from a maiden name of Wardle to the name Sutton.
