I came across this entry and wondered if there's any way of knowing who his mother was without having to buy the certificate?

If it is a birth in the index before 1911 then you will have to buy the certificate for his mother's name or look for him in the census records to see if he is with his parents.

If the birth was Sept 1911 onwards then the mothers maiden name will be on the birth registration

Try giving us the name of the child if you are struggling

Oooh...sorry, yes you're right of course he is most likely still on fullers earth...I think it was due to using Freebmd and I always think of that as 'way back'

Ginny, thank you. I have the Letson and Mellor marriage and I was wondering if Elizabeth had Harold before she was married and maybe after she married Harold Mellor they changed his surname to Mellor?
