mary durrant born 1839 in Brighton in the 1881 census is in Paddington as the butlers wife, but no butler in residence that night, her eldest son is William born 1873, thats before the marriage in 1876. Had a quick look for butlers with Durrant name in 1881 but no williams. incase he was away. |

A bit hard to get marriage cert if you don't know the right one to order, I have five siblings to try, am looking at other trees if they know the history of William Edward and where he lived in Eastbourne I know we will be matched, and they may have already discovered Carolines maiden name or I will order a sibling birth cert who has a large gap to William George my grandfather. |

I don't think that Liz has the marriage certificate but was working on the theory that the 1876 to Caroline Bradshaw must be the correct one. Obviously it isn't so it's back to the drawing board to try and find the correct one and match Caroline to the lady in the census. |

Thanks for the clue with Greenwich I think we may then be on to Burt being the very neat handwriting on the birth cert, but also very small, it looks like a u and r because of the way durrant is written, I think looking at the other siblings is a good idea. |

Do you believe your great grand mother was a Bradshaw because of this 1876 marriage or do you have it documented else where? |

Thanks, for all your info, my confusion is the actual birth certificate that Caroline Durrant registered for William Edward her maiden name is not Bradshaw and it looks like Bicht. As I could not find Caroline Bradshaw I hit on the Bicht family, I wish I had talked to my parents more!! Will try and look at other variations. Thanks again. It is the couple mentioned above on the 1891 census William is there he was born in April missed the 1881 census. Following him on later census I do know I am with the right one because of where he was living, then and the appearance of my grandfather. |

Caroline Becht married Andrew Soderland in 1880 and in the 1881 census is living with him in the same building as her parents. |
