Divorce is highly unlikely due to the costs involved, they can be searched on the National Archives website, but I've looked and no sign of one.
The only place I can see Jane Savage name mentioned relating to the marriage to Edward Mulvannah is on Lancashirebmd, and I wonder if it is a mistake? On the original index of marriages I would have expected to see Edward listed twice but he isn't, nor is there a listing for Jane Savage on the index just one for Jane Gilligan.
Also, Jane Gilligan, born Ireland and husband James appear together on the census going to 1911, although I think they have put his as also born Ireland on that one.
The only way to be sure would be to get a copy of the marriage certificate.
Adoption records are not accessible to anyone other than the adoptee, but official adoptions only started sometime in the 1920s before this time they were informal arrangements. Lots of information can be found on this site: http://www.norcap.org.uk/

No adoption records until the mid-1920's....and they are accessible only to the people directly concerned
Divorce was extremely rare in the 19th century.
People just 'moved on'....and told lies when marrying again.
BUT................are you 100% certain that this Jane is the woman who married James?
Marriages Mar 1888 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dolan Margaret Manchester 8d 317 Flattley Thomas Frederick Manchester 8d 317 GILLIGAN Jane Manchester 8d 317 <<<<<<<<<<NO mention of 'Savage' MULVANNAH Edward Manchester 8d 317 <<<<<<<<<<
How can you possibly have census coverage for James and Jane up to 1901............and think that Jane married someone else in 1888?
Have you cross-referenced the birth years and birthplaces of the two Janes?

Thanks for all your info sorry late reply internet went down. I have just joined ancestry where Jane Savage came up as a ahint for some one elses tree where she has my Jane marrying Mulvannah and having children with a direct link to the tree owner. Do Lancs free BMD have many transcribed errors. From what you have all said think my tree is right as I do have census to 1911. Thanks for your help and advise about sites saves me messing up my tree completely. Do you do this professionally or just hooked on the puzzle solving as I fear I am getting that way. Thanks Flip Flick and Vera

We are all just paying GR members like you.
TIP: Don't get led astray by other peoples' trees........their research may not be thorough.
Rely on your own findings, as long as you have taken care to verify them.

From another hooked amateur, Flick is right about not trusting other peoples trees. I've fallen into that trap which in some cases has prooved wildly wrong.
It's strange that Lancashirebmd have this information though. I thought they transcribed from the original regional registers not from the central index. Maybe the only way to know for sure is to contact them so they can check if an error has been made and correct their records if necessary. Just in case you don't have the entry as it appears in their records:
