[Seeking birth/census/immigration info please, for Joseph HARVEY, born c1894 Chelmsford Essex (from Australian WWI enlistment). He died in Western Australia in 1965 aged 71. (I have his marriage and spouse's details.)

He had a brother named George Frederick HARVEY, b. c1891 Essex, d. 1971 aged 81, also in Western Australia.

I think I can see George in UK 1901 census, but no sign of Joseph.

Nor can I see their immigration to Australia by 1915. They may have come via South Australia.]

UPDATE: Can someone please check the 1901 census for this George to see who else is in the household?:
Harvey George 1891 b. Essex Billericay [living at] London, St Pancras

Thanks!
Cherilyn

Any help greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Do you have names of their parents?

Is there a father's name shown on his marriage certificate?

Lynski

Joseph was the only Harvey on that particular ship

Between 1889 and 1892 there are 2 George Frederick Harvey's born in Essex -

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Mar 1891 (>99%)
Harvey George Frederick Lexden 4a 611

Births Jun 1891 (>99%)
HARVEY George Frederick Billericay 4a 483

I wonder which one is yours?

Just had a thought - who did Joseph marry? Was she named Jessie by any chance???

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 28 Feb 2011 08:37

Joseph married Mary Lucy Gwendoline SANDERS (1900-1966) in 1928 in WA.

Why do you ask??? :)

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 28 Feb 2011 09:08

Just found Joseph's WWII enlistment and it gives his birth date as 2 July 1894 in Chelmsford, England. But there's nothing on FreeBMD.

He died in Sep 1965 aged 71, so that fits his date of birth as 1894 too.

There was a Jessie Marsh Harvey going to Australia but in the mid 1900's and I just started to think outside the obvious - obviously I was wrong!

I have searched all through the 1901 census and I have not found Joseph Harvey that matches your information.

Clutching at straws, I did find this family with a George and a Joseph of the right ages (approximately) -

1901 census –
HARVEY, Thomas W Head Married M 33 1868 Railway Goods Guard
Burton Staffordshire
HARVEY, Ann J Wife Married F 33 1868
Burton Staffordshire
HARVEY, Charlotte Daughter Single F 12 1889

**** HARVEY, Joseph Son Single M 8 1893

HARVEY, Thomas W Son Single M 4 1897

HARVEY, Mary A Daughter Single F 1 (18 MOS) 1900

The only thing is, if this family were right, why would Joseph say Essex on his enlistment??

You mentioned that you think you have found George in the 1901 census - can you remember where so that I can have a look too?

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Holbrook Joseph W. Ham 4a 99
Hulks Joseph James Edmonton 3a 431
Hunt Joseph Harold W. Ham 4a 269
Hymas Joseph Chelmsford 4a 509

These are the only birth registrations for Joseph in Sep and Dec Qtr 1894 in county of Essex.

There is only one Joseph Harvey???

Without a name for one of his parents, this is going to be very difficult - I wonder if the marriage certificate would give his father's name?

There is no Joseph born in the same districts as George Frederick which is a shame.

Lynski

Lynski Report 28 Feb 2011 09:29

These are all the Joseph Harvey's on FreeBMD between 1894 and 1901 in the county of Essex -

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Jun 1894 (>99%)
Harvey Joseph Stephen W. Ham 4a 145
Births Dec 1894 (>99%)
Harvey Joseph Morgan W. Ham 4a 180
Births Mar 1895 (>99%)
Harvey Joseph Charles W. Ham 4a 165
Births Sep 1896 (>99%)
Harvey Joseph Wilfrid W. Ham 4a 34
Births Mar 1898 (>99%)
Harvey Joseph Thomas W. Ham 4a 21
Births Mar 1901 (>99%)
Harvey Joseph Henry Edmonton 3a 471

There is the possibility that he could have lied about his age to enlist??? I have heard of that happening before.

Lynski Report 28 Feb 2011 10:05

A mystery indeed!

I am still searching but to no avail.

As you say, it looks as though certificates are needed and they could hold the clue to the mystery.

I have ancestors in my tree that are all illegitimate (3 girls and a boy all with different fathers!) so just because George is older doesn't necessarily mean that their mother is married?? She could still be single??

Good luck with your search and the certificates - if you find anything please add to this thread and I will see it in my thread participation.

Regards
Lynne

Don't forget that the info on the death certificate is only as good as the informant's knowledge.

Hm, thanks Lynne. No Joseph...maybe that is not the right George.

Can you please look at the George HARVEY aged 10 shown as born in Bethnal Green?

Thank you!
