Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 19 Feb 2011 13:16

Hello All

I've lost Elsworth Henry Segust (b. 1886) on the 1911 census. He's not with his family and I can't see him on his own.

I know that he was around somewhere as there is a record of him returning from NZ in 1928 (aged 41 and described as a steward).

I know also that the name is not an easy one to search. I've been pinging corrections off to Ancestry this morning!

I've found him on all other censuses and his marriage record etc it is just the 1911 and at the moment I am assuming he went off abroad somewhere - so the outgoing records might help.

I don't have full findmypast sub - just the 1911 so I'm struggling a bit. Hope one of you lovely people can spot him on a ship sailing off into the sunset ...

Many thanks

Jill

If he was down as a steward, then maybe he was working away as a Ships steward.

So maybe the return trip I found was either his last trip or after he'd stopped being a ship's steward? He married a year or so later.

Hi Ladykira - thanks for looking for me. I think the surname is a bit of a problem in all of this.

But, thank you.

Hi Anne - thank you - I have most of that so will check the other bits. Elsworth's father was not called Elsworth - so the other Elsworth is an uncle. It seems to be given to one of the boys in every generation that I've found - interesting name to search for I'm quite enjoying it all!

Choccy - thank you! That definitely pins him down in NZ if he was on the ER ... he must have been a bit static for a while. Thank you.

Residence was a ship ... a different ship to the one he travelled back on in March 1928 ... interesting.

Hmmm.

SS Manaia looks to have been wrecked in 1926 - perhaps he was stuck in NZ for a while - unless it was a different SS Manaia

http://www.ohinemuri.org.nz/journal/44/ss_mania.htm

Part of the text -

'On the night of Thursday 10 June 1926, the vessel Manaia ran aground on the south eastern point of Slipper Island, off the coast of Tairua. The Manaia was a vessel of 1159 tons, with a length of 220 feet and belonged to the Northern Steam Ship Co. At the time of the wreck she was on her regular run from Tauranga to Auckland, under the command of Captain W F Norbury, with a crew of 36. There were also 55 passengers aboard.'

Ooh Choccy - looks interesting. There was an article in the recent FH magazine about a shipwreck in Oz and there are probably some sites and reference in there. I will go and dig it out.

Thank you

- Manaia The atmosphere heavy from smoke from bush fires when at 2am on the 15th January 1897, the Manaia stranded on a reef off the mouth of the Oeo River. The Manaia was a screw steamer of 81 tons gross, under the command of Captain George Archibald Simpson. The Court of Inquiry held the master responsible for going to sea with his vessel improperly equipped, and for negligent navigation. It is probably the boiler of the ?Manaia? that can be seen wedged in rocks off the mouth of the Oeo River at very low tides. Probably the anchor found in the 1960s in the same vicinity and now on the memorial to the crew or ?Lizzie Bell? at the Pihama Cemetery, belongs to this ship and not the ?Lizzie Bell.?
