I am trying to find information of the above, but I cannot find a marriage nor a baptism for either John Whitecross or Marion Hadden. I have looked from 1770 for a birth or marriage but found nothing for either of them, until the birth of their first child John born 1806 in North Berwick, Scotland.. Any help greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I looked for her this mornin g but could find no trace of either her baptism or their marriage. Have you looked on Scotland's People?

I looked on Scotlands people this morning but could find no trace of Marian or a marriage for them

It's very odd. I checked the military marriages this morning but they don't appear on there either.

I haven't heard of Scotlands people, could you pleae give me more info? I have wondered if Hadden should be spelt Halden as because I did find one birth with parents John Whitecross and Marion Halden, but I also searched for that and didn't come up with anything, but maybe this Scotlans people will have something?

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov is the website that has the records of the General Register Office Scotland. It is a pay to view site (although some searches can be free). Credits cost £6 for 30 credits - 1 credit to view search results and 5 to view / download entry. Births after 1910, marriages 1935 and deaths 1950 are not available to view online.

Statutory registration didn't begin until 1855 in Scotland.

Thank you rootgatherer. I am beginning to think I am going mad now but I know I found the parents of some Whitecross children to have parents John Whitecross and Marion Hadden, I have tried various spellings for her as well, Mary Ann/Marian/Halden/Haddon but nothing!!!!

The Old Parish Records (OPRs) on Scotlandspeople are mostly Church of Scotland records. If your ancestors married in a different Church (eg. United Free Church, Episcopalian etc) you may have to look elsewhere for the records. Try looking at the Catalogue (online) for The National Archives of Scotland to see if they have any other records for churches in the area.

I am sure that somewhere on the Scotlandspeople website it gives the dates (by parish ) of the earliest parish records available.

There is this extra birth possibly belonging to the family.

MARION WHITECROSS

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
22 JUL 1804 North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland

Parents:
Father: JOHN WHITECROSS
Mother: MARION HALDANE

Checked for a marriage for this couple ... nothing coming up.

I found this information from a family tree by googling (Euphan Whitecross) The tree contains all the names mentioned previously in this thread. However, the owner of the tree does not have a birth date for Marion or a marriage for John and Marion either ...

Have a look at the tree for yourself and read up on the Whitecross family lineage ... as recorded by the tree owner.

thank you rootgatherer, I am not very familiar with Scottish records so the information is useful.
Helen - yes, I saw this birth and it is that which made me wonder if the name of Marion is incorrect. I will have a look at the tree as you suggest, thank you.

Have had a look this morning at son Peter's baptism on Scotlands People and the mothers name is definitely given as Marion Hadden

Have had another look for her birth using Hadden/Haddon/Haldane/Haldean and christian names Marion & Margo but still no joy I'm afraid

In some cases, marriages and births (or census) cannot be found due to the fact the original records just can't be deciphered and so the information will not be available on Familysearch or even Scotlandspeople.

Not to say the record does not exist ... but is merely unreadable.

I have viewed many early Scottish parish records ... some of which are partly or almost totally obliterated.

Beejay and Helen, many thanks for your help, I shall have to be content with what I have already found I think. Thanks again
