Here's an update now that I've downloaded the census documents & received some certificates. This all refers to the Henry Bentley born around 1822. Some of this has already been covered above but I thought I'd try to keep it chronological:-

Henry remarried in 1861:-

12/08/1861, Cobridge Church, Burslem, Henry BENTLEY, aged 38, Widower, Potter, living in Harts Hill, son of William BENTLEY, Potter, married Thirza ASH, age 36, widow, living in Hanley, daughter of Daniel STANWAY, Potter. The marriage was witnessed by Henry STANWAY & Dinah COXON.

Before continuing it would pay to stay with Thirza ASH for a while.

In 1841 she was living with her father & sister:-

Thirza had married in 1844:-

11/11/1844, Wolstanton Parish Church, Thirza STANWAY, spinster, living in Chell, daughter of Daniel STANWAY, Potter, married Samuel ASH, bachelor, Potter, living in Chell, son of Thomas ASH, Shoemaker. The marriage was witnessed by Aaron ASH & Dinah STANWAY.

Thirza & Samuel had at least one child:-

Thomas Henry ASH: born 20/10/1845, Mollart Street, Shelton; father Samuel ASH, Presser; mother Thirza ASH formerly STANWAY; registered by his mother, living at Mollart Street, Shelton on 26/11/1845.

Samuel died in 1848 aged 27:-

Died 30/11/1848, Union Street, Stoke upon Trent, age 27, Potter, cause of death: consumption, not certified, witness present at death Harriett SMITH resident in Union Street, Stoke upon Trent, registered 02/12/1848.

Thirza appears again on the 1851 census as Thirza ASH, is widowed & is living in her father’s house:-

Henry died in 1900 aged 78:-

Died 01/05/1900, at 35 Hartshill, Stoke upon Trent, age 78, Potters Foreman, cause of death: Bronchitis, registered by Henry BENTLEY, son, in attendance, resident at 99 Richmond Street, Stoke upon Trent, registered 01/05/1900.

In 1901 Henry & Thirza’s daughter Thirza was living at the same address in Hartshill, Penkhull as she was living with her parents in 1891. It looks like she had taken in lodgers although the other 2 occupants are recorded as ‘Head’:-

R. CARTER, occupier, 578 Newcastle Road, Stoke on Trent, registered 12/07/1950.

There are always discrepancies in people's ages.....

Some didn't know how hold they were, took a couple of years off to "stay younger" and some just gave a rough age

Being single, she probably told fibs about her age!

The address on the 1891 & 1901 both match - 35, Harts Hill, Stoke Upon Trent, Hartshill County.

Her age doesn't seem to match though. She should be 39 on the 1901 so perhaps the transcriber mistook 39 for 34.

1911 is a bit odd. In 1911 she should be 49 or 50 so perhaps 49 became
46.

I think I need to look at the scans to check these.

It looks like Thirza STANWAY married Samuel ASH & then later married Henry BENTLEY. I think I shall purchase a copy of the certificate of the latter marriage. Hopefully there will be enough information to find out which Henry married Thirza. I certainly have a lot of new information to go on.

She would have been still young enough to have given birth to Thirza so the age from the above census seems ok.

I notice that I don't have census records for Henry senior apart from 1851 & 1861. Can someone possibly help out with filling the gaps?

Hmm, that is a possibility. That would mean that either at Henry & Thirza's marriage in 1861 or at baby Thirza's birth in 1862 Thirza used her maiden name as opposed to her married name.

That would also infer that there must be either a marriage of Thirza ASH to a Mr STANWAY or a Thirza STANWAY to a Mr ASH. I think?
