Can anyone help me find the marriage of William Henry Sowter, he was born 1923 in Burton on Trent, I think the marriage could be between 1939-1945.

GlitterBaby Report 9 Feb 2011 22:24

Is there a reason why you think the marriage took place in Scotland.

Just wondering as there is a possible marriage in 1952 in Burton, Staffs

John Report 9 Feb 2011 22:27

Thanks for the info. We were told her name was Anne, I guess it was Annie but which one?

Cathy

Cathy Report 9 Feb 2011 22:40

Hi John,

It looks like they are both for the same marriage as the numbers are the same. Annie must have had 2 surnames ...... possibly married before?

Kind regards,

Cathy

John

It doesn't matter which one of those marriages posted by Frank 06 you order, Annie is the same person, she was just also known by another name (probably a previous marriage for her).

Umm, Thanks everyone for the information, it looks like I've got more digging to do. And, if I've offending anyone by my request I apologise.

Hi peterandjaki,

Actually you can search for free on scotlandspeople once you register. You only use credits to see a record or image. It's a really good site though and well worth a look but familiarise yourself with the site before you buy credits as it's easy to waste them if you're not careful!

Hi Mary, PM sent....

Cathy Report 9 Feb 2011 23:35

Sorry, it's just that you said " even a search costs a credit " which it doesn't..... and I'm sure if anyone doesn't want to use a credit to help someone else they won't. Will they?

Potty Report 10 Feb 2011 11:54

familysearch is good to use for Scottish Records before about 1875 - If you can find the records there first it can save a lot of credits on scotlandspeople if you are looking for a common name.

I would be interested to learn how to bring up the reference Frank 06 did without spending one credit. Seems I have been wasting my credits.

Hi

Ive just done a free search.
There was an Annie Reid married a MCKISSOCK in 1936 Kilmarnock Ayr.

Hi Denis,

Frank would have used 1 credit as there was no brides name to put in the search.
If the bride and bridegroom names are known then it is possible to find the marriage without using up your credits. It's a bit fiddly and time consuming but you just have to keep narrowing your options.

That's just what Marion has done :-)

There were 2 marriage records for Annie's marriage to William Henry Sowter. One as Reid (maiden name) and one as McKissock which was her married name.

MarionfromScotland Report 10 Feb 2011 14:13

Theres also 2 pages of Mckissock births between 1936-1946,but thats another story lol

I wouldn't dare ask anyone to investigate further :-) I'm new to this game, and didn't know about the Scottish records thing. That's probably why I couldn't find anything. I would like to thank everyone for their comments and help.

Hi John.

What is it you are looking for and we can try and point you in the right direction.
Register with Scotlandspeople and have a look. you dont need to pay anything to join.
It's well worth the £6 for 30 credits. The Scottish records give a you a lot of detail (certain years).Have a look and see.

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

This is a pay per view site which can prove costly if you jump in with both feet, so you really have to use all available details in order to cut down the matches.
Common sense says it's unlikely that a couple born in Kelso will be the same couple marrying in John O'Groats....... possible but unlikely.
Similarly the three year old in the 1879 Kelso census won't be giving birth soon in Sutherland.
Even allowing for all the pitfalls of that initial surge of genealogical research madness, each online viewing will cost £1.00 so it's possible to look at half a dozen certificates for less than the cost of sending off for one English certificate!!

At a cost of 1 credit to view a page of 24 search results and 5 credits to view / save / print a certificate, it certainly is not a rip off as the total cost for that would be 6 credits which is £1.20 and you can view it online.

How much does the English certificate cost after you have ploughed through pages of possible marriages etc and sent off for what you hope is the correct one??

Scotlandspeople is a very simple site to use...... just enter the details, start slowly and build it up, so lets do a search for an imaginary John Smith. born 1910........... Aaargghhh

Enter Smith.......that's all.
You will be told the total number of birth matches for Smith.

## Last search found 226467 matches for Smith ##

Enter John...no middle names
You will be told the total number of birth matches for John Smith.

## Last search found 16066 matches for John Smith ##

Remember the spelling...............

John will be recognised, Jon will not.
James will be recognised, Jim will not..
Iain will be recognised, Ian will not.
Or vice versa depending on what spelling you enter.

Enter his D.O.B.....you can vary the D.O.B from one year to multiple years to find all births in between.

You will be told the total number of birth matches for John Smith 1910.

## Last search found 133 matches John Smith 1910 ##

If there are still lots of matches then in the COUNTY / CITY drop down menu, enter a city / town which will further reduce the matches.

## Last search found 30 matches John Smith 1910 Glasgow. ##

If there are still lots of matches then in the DISTRICT drop down menu, enter a district which will further reduce the matches.

All of the above have not cost any credits at all so a search for "Ronaldino Rooney Best" would by it's uniquness, show up 1 result which could quickly be pinned down to a place and year by manipulation of the search parameters at no cost !

Here is an index page of 24 results which you would receive on payment of one credit.
Clicking on the "Image View ... 5 credits" would at a cost of 5 credits, allow you to download the certificate in order to view or save or print out.

All searches, certificates etc are all retained on Scotlandspeople history for free viewing whenever you login.

Any middle names are a bonus as you can see from the Beattie search, however they sometimes don't appear so be prepared..

You can use wildcards e.g BEATT* would bring up any name starting with BEATT....BEATTIE, BEATTY, BEATTIES.
SM*TH would bring up SMITH, SMYTH.........
