In 1901 and 1911 the address can be looked up on the census. later than that you would have to look at an electoral roll but they are not on line

Thank you, the house was built around 1895 so would like to find out who lived in it then?

If you are unable to search yourself, post the address and we will take a look

If you post the address, I can look for it in 1901 and 1911, but for in between times you will have to visit th area to look at the records yourself. If you don't want to post the address on here for any reason, click on my name and send it in a message

Oh dear, it is the same on the 1911 as well, some of them have house names rather than numbers,so it may have been one of them. I assume it didn't have a house name later on

no not as far as i'm aware, since i was a young child this house has always just had a number, since the 60's its been owned by my cousin & she has asked me if i could find out who may have lived there when it was first built aprox 1895

I looked at it on google maps, it is in a terrace so unlikely to have just had a name

Have you tried Google earth? Or Google maps - where you can hone in on a satellite view and then look around the street in question?

its only half way down the road there must be 40 odd houses either side

Ali

Ali Report 5 Feb 2011 22:23

thanks Mrs G, i know the road very well, its who lived there 100 years ago that i'm interested in, not sure that google earth would help me with this

Sorry Ali - thought from the earlier postings that you just had a name of a house not a number - it's worth checking Google maps then as some of the older terraces had name plaques on them.

I have a house name for someone and know the road (of about the same era as yours), but they are all now numbered.
What I hope to do is take note of the family names in 1901 and 1911 and match it with later lists (1920s) which are in the library. Hopefully some of the families will have stayed put and I can work out which house was the one I am after.

Not exactly the same problem as yours, but the same method may work.
