Familyfinder Report 3 Feb 2011 19:44

I have found several newsapper reports of my ancestor John Gleeson and an unsavoury partner in crime Jane Loveys in newspapers spanning about 30 years in Exeter Devon. I believe she married a John Day in 1875 as the reports then change to a Jane Day and John Gleeson instead! I would be grateful if anyone can spot her on a census in 1871 or earlier as I do not where she came from before and what she did (not sure I want to know!) I tried to see her on 1881 as Jane Day with John-but can see nothing.Cannot find John Gleeson in 1881 either-I wondered if they were at HM pleasure together. any light on her I'd be grateful to try and untangle her web.

Have you found John Gleeson on any census???

I'm thinking that his accomplice of over 30 years might well live in the same place

Have him on a few-in 1881 he married another accomplice-Mary Duffy-the 3 of them Mary,John and jane were all at eat others throats/etc for years. Not so sure he wasn't their pimp actually! they lived in and out of the pubs and punched each other from one week to the next according to local newspapers. But not sure where Jane came from-or went after she married in 1875-although she appears with John Gleeson-fighting-in later police notes/papers as jane Day well into the 1880's-but just not on a census. Not sure if she is on earlier ones as my library is shut at the moment.

oh god-Have just realised that in 1871-John Gleeson is the Head-and all the lodgers are single girls-apart from one I have a nasty hunch my mum is right. I have just found Police indexes for jane Loveys-many charges-her occupation-a prostitute.Oh dear....

Have you seen this one?
The Old Golden Lion, Market Street....

A new landlord, Francis Sarrell did not improve the reputation of the place when he summoned William Stevens for abusive language, who was fined 10s or 14 days imprisonment in May 1862. In July 1866 the house was transferred from Mr Rattenbury to Mr J Phillips, as the previous landlord Mr Sarrell was declared bankrupt. 1868 was another year of petty crime at the Old Golden Lion with a case of stolen glasses, then John Gleeson was summoned for creating a disturbance and a further case of assault, all within a few months.

I just did a search using his surname on this site. I also tried Loveys, there is a mention of a William which could tie in.
