Hi if any one could help i would really appreciate it. I am trying to find the parents of a jesse Dowsett born 1820 in bulphan essex. I believe the father to be either James or Thomas Dowsett and have been unable to find any details re a mother. Ive checked the cencus records from 1841 - 1901 where I find him living with his future inlaws and then later living with his wife and children but no clues to his actual family. Tried the freebmd records but they dont go that far back and the parish records for bulphan dont seem to have been transcribed. Got a mental block now and dont know what to try now. please, any suggestions.

I think the baptism Astra found is spot on. The"spelling" difference would come from someone misreading the double-ess character (looks like a swooping f) as a "p".

mike.. yes i believe that's my man. managed to find that information but no clues as to his parents.

Flick

Flick Report 1 Feb 2011 13:34

Can I just add to what Maureen has posted.............

In olde English, double 'S' was written as 'fs'...........which can easily look like 'p'.......as the 'f' was written above and below the line

So the baptism is your man.......and 1841 census is his family

If you still have doubts, the obvious solution is to buy the marriage cert for Jesse and his wife

Mariea Report 1 Feb 2011 13:40

MaureeninNY... yes I was inclined to agree with you but still cant find either a jepe or jesse on any cen prior to 1851. The 1841 cen shows a james and priscilla Dowsett and two daughters only. The first cen he shows up on is 1851 living in west tilbury with his future father in law. wonder if he was for some reason brought up by father in law... oh its so confussing.

Flick

Flick Report 1 Feb 2011 13:49

In 1841, he would have been 20/21 years old, and hardly likely to be still with his parents.........

The head of the household where he was lodging in 1851 was only ten years older than Jesse, so how would he have 'brought him up'?

And was he really Jesse's future father-in-law?

Flick

Flick Report 1 Feb 2011 13:51

Look at the IMAGE of 1851, to see exactly what Maureen and I mean with regard to the double 'S'

Thanks for explaining that better than I did,Flick! It was too early in the morning for me to be attempting something coherent.
