I wonder if anyone can help solve this mystery for me please! I have Frances Garrett marrying John Paulucci on 15th August 1842, but on their daughter Hannah's birth certificate 1851 the mother's name is shown as formerly Smith. I have found a marriage on 13th December 1831 of Frances Garrett to James Smith, they are not on the 1841 census. I have looked in various records but cannot find either the birth nor first marriage of Frances. I do have her down as born in Burton Overy, Leicestershire but this came from another source and has not been confirmed. I hope someone can help please!

Have you got the family on any census at all? If she married as a Garrett this "should" be her first husband's name, if indeed she was married before, and Smith her maiden name..

From the information you have all given me above it seems the marriage certificate I have for Frances Garratt and John Paulucci has misled me. It shows Frances Garratt as a spinster and the information for her father is blank. Am I to conclude that she was widowed? Or did they get divorced in those days? I have found a death of a James Garratt in July 1842, surely if this is Frances's husband she would not have remarried the following month - would she??? I really appreciate your help everyone, any further comments much appreciated.

Sorry, ignore the death of James Garratt, that is incorrect. My head is spinning, sorry folks!

Foxglove Report 31 Jan 2011 15:36

Flick, yes John Paulucci was married twice, he is shown as a widower on his marriage certificate to Frances Garratt, I am still searching for Frances's first husband James Garratt and have found nothing for his death. Is it possible they were divorced? If so how would I find out?

Flick

Flick Report 31 Jan 2011 15:56

Divorce was unheard-of............except for the seriously wealthy.........and even for them, it was difficult

As she called herself a spinster........and didn't give her father's name, it COULD mean that she was marrying bigamously..

The baptism I posted matches her details - IF her birth name was Smith

The 1842 marriage seems to fit with regard to John.................it it's the right man, the 1841 census records a lie, as her surname would not have been Paulucci when it was taken

Who witnessed the marriage? Any clues there?

Foxglove

Foxglove Report 31 Jan 2011 16:01

oh my goodness! I had been told she was disowned by her family because she was an unmarried mother, but now it is even more of a mystery!!! She is shown as living at the same address as John Paulucci when they were married, and as her father's name was blank, perhaps you are correct that she married bigamously!!!! I didn't think they got divorced in those days, so thank you very much Flick for all your help!

Foxglove Report 31 Jan 2011 16:09

Sorry Flick, I didn't read the part about the witnesses at the marriage to John Paulucci. He signed the register but it was the Mark of Frances Garratt and the witnesses also made Marks, they were William Guttridge and Elizabeth Guttridge. I never thought of looking at them for information, like I said in an earlier message, I am quite new to all this.
