Zena, it's possible that Jane was with relatives - perhaps Mary Ann's parents?
There are a few possibilities for Mary Ann in the 1851 - do you know who her parents were and we can maybe trace that way?

Zena, did Jane's marriage certificate give her mother's name please? Did is say Mary Ann Burke formerly Farmer?
Just wondering as Mary Ann is not with her parents in 1851 and not with her daughter Jane in 1861.

Looking at the actual image for that 1891 census Mary Ann's surname does look like Bird.
Could this be a possible marriage? The only problem perhaps, with this is that you thought that Mary Ann had married Patrick Burke so for a second marriage you would expect her to marry as Mary Ann Burke!

Hi Rootgatherer thank you for your reply.
On Janes marriage in 1877 her mother is not on there and no fathers names her witnesses are James and Ann Lowrey.
I have the marriage for Mary Ann Farmer and Patrick Burke in 1859 she is a spinster aged 25 Patrick is a widowerer aged 36 the witnesses are Richard Darby and Rose Doolan.
Thank you Zena
