The birth certificate will give you the name of his mother and his father if known.

Norton in Stockton is different from Norton and Malton in Yorkshire.

It's strange to be a boarder at age 7! but that must be him as he is still there in 1881 and later as a railway worker

Thanks though will have to send for cert.

There is also this birth, which would cover Norton:

Births Sep 1864
HUGILL Robert William Stockton 10a 43

Mary, I notice you say later census gives birthplace as Norton/Malton.

Malton is quite some way from Norton -are you sure you're not getting these two Roberts mixed up?

EDIT: Well, I never knew there was a Norton in Yorkshire as well. I've learned something!

Norton and Malton in Yorkshire are often referred to together as "Norton and Malton". I think they are on either side of the River Derwent.

I thought this could POSSIBLY be Robert's father but nothing to confirm this. You would really need to buy the Malton birth certificate.

who did Robert marry?

only there is this marriage on the new familysearch site, which has a Robetr Hugill b. 1863 marrying Margaret Peacock .... and no father is shown for him

and an unmarried mother could be the explanation for him being a boarder from a child.

Knapton and Norton are both in the Malton area according to Genuki.

"KNAPTON, (East and West), in the parish of Wintringham, and wapentake of Buckrose; 1½ miles NNW. of Wintringham, 7 miles NE. of Malton. The river Derwent at this place is navigable for small vessels. Population, 206."

NORTON, a parish in the wapentake of Buckrose; ½ mile SE. of Malton. The church (see Churches for photograph) is a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of Mr. Ewbank, of which the Rev. John Richardson is the incumbent. At the foot, of the bridge, between this place and Malton was, pretty early in the time of Henry II., a hospital, dedicated to St. Nicholas, founded by Roger de Flamvill, and placed under the government of the canons of Malton. Population, 1017.

There is actually another Norton in Yorkshire in the Doncaster area.

Thank you for carrying on the detective work.

Norton and malton are practically the same place ..you just walk across the bridge over the river to get from one to the other.

I was thinking along the lines of Robert being the child of a single person.
Either a widower (in which case the William mentioned would be a distinct possibility) or an illigitimate child of a female unmarried Hugill
being looked after while she was away for work?

Found these christened in Knapton Near Malton
John 1846 by Richard and Jane
Alice 1850 by richard and Jane
Thomas 1844 by Richard and Jane

William 1842 by william and mary
Charles 1844 by william and mary

Daniel 1859 by elizabeth
Thomas 1861 by Elizabeth.

Maryb

EDIT Elizabeth 1840 Knapton is the daughter of Richard 1807 thornton Yorks and Jane1807 Thornton ,she is with them in 1861 along with her sons Daniel and thomas
She had a brother Robert Hugill born 1836.

Mary

Mary Report 24 Jan 2011 17:49

Elizabeth Hugill 1840 married 1865 in malton to robert Cass born 1841 Caske Yorks
They went on to have quite a few children.
1871 there was with them in Rillington D1 > 4 john Hugill 1848 her brother.
1881 there is Alice Hartley who I think is Alice hugill 1850 her sister.

Richard Hugill 1807 died 1866 and wife Jane 1807 died 1869.

Thomas Hugill died Malton 1862.maybe Elizabeth's son as she had another thomas when married to robert Cass.

Robert was lodging with Jane Kitson, she was married to richard Kitson born 1804 died 1871 he was born new malton.
He had a sister Jane Kitson 1808 New malton.

Could this be the Jane who married Richard Hugill??
So that could explain Robert being at jane Kitsons as this would be his Aunt, but there again why isn't he with his mum.

Maybe he new husband didn't want Robert and Daniel.

Maryb

There are trees on here with Jane Kitson 1808 maybe its worth dropping them a line.

The next two villages east of Malton and Norton are Settrington and Rillinton. Both of which have a large Hugill presence in the 1891 and 1881 census.Maybe a link, maybe not.
