In the G.R. single line census I have found several members of the Jackson family but am unable to find the father John

1841
Jackson Samuel 1827 Yorkshire Huddersfield, Huddersfield

Jackson Hannah 1797 Yorkshire Huddersfield, Huddersfield

Jackson Abraham 1831 Yorkshire Huddersfield, Huddersfield

Jackson Mary 1829 Yorkshire Huddersfield, Huddersfield

Jackson Joshua 1835 Yorkshire Huddersfield, Huddersfield

Do all these show up as one family please?

Many thanks,
Frances

Thank you Kathleen, the second family seems most likely and I couldn't find the father because I wasn't naming him Jno!
Perhaps Samuel is already away working?

Janet Report 22 Jan 2011 14:34

There is a second Samuel Jackson in Huddersfield but he is the son of ? Daniel Jackson. Both Daniel Jackson and Jno Jackson live within a mile of each other-.jl

Thank you Janet. It seems I did not have all the correct info but I now have Samuel Jackson in Dewsbury (Where he was born) with Sarah Chadwick, possibly his grandmother. Does the 1841 specify this relationship please?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 22 Jan 2011 16:15

The 1841 census does not give relationships.

Is this the Samuel Jackson you mean in Dewsbury:-

Name: Samuel Jackson
Age: 15
Estimated birth year: abt 1826
Gender: Male
Where born: Yorkshire, England
Civil Parish: Dewsbury
Hundred: Agbrigg (Lower Division)
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England

Street address: Bridge End

Occupation:

Registration district: Dewsbury
Sub-registration district: Dewsbury

Household Members:
Name Age

Samuel Jackson 15
Mary Jackson 10

Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 1268; Book: 1; Civil Parish: Dewsbury; County: Yorkshire; Enumeration District: 1; Folio: 7; Page: 7; Line: 8; GSU roll: 464239.

If so Samuel and Mary are in the same building but entered as a separate household to Sarah Chadwick.

Thank you Kath. I have been told that Samuel had a sister Mary but she didn't show up in IGI for John and Hannah. If they are together in the same building as Sarah, are there any 'grown-ups' with them?

Hi Frances,

For some reason Sarah Chadwick does not come up on the list of people in the 1841 census when I try to search for her name (but she is there).

I think the enumerator might have put a small line between Samuel and the other people in the household by mistake. Usually a double line means the start of a new house or building and a single line means the same house but a separate household. Perhaps he IS in the same household. There is Sarah Chadwick age 65, John Chadwick age 40, Mary Chadwick age 35 and Joseph Chadwick age 30 (all ages rounded down) and no relationships given. However at age 15 I think Samuel would have been considered a "grown-up" in those days.

If you would like a copy of the image so you can see for yourself just send me a pm with your email address and I'll send it later today.

Hi Frances

Just found this marriage which possibly connects Sarah Chadwick.

John Jackson married Hannah Chadwick 3 April 1823 Dewsbury-jle

Janet

Janet Report 23 Jan 2011 13:19

This is the previous marriage which now connects Sarah

Samuel Chadwick married Sarah Hutchinson 10 Aug 1796 -Dewsbury-jle

Frances Report 23 Jan 2011 18:08

Thanks Janet, you are on the same marriages as I have. I am doing the research for a possible descendant of Hannah Chadwick, where my ancestor is Hannah's sister Martha. Unfortunately Samuel and Mary are not with what is hoped to be their family in the 1841 census so proving the link to their 'brother' Joshua c1835 is not easy.

Janet

Janet Report 24 Jan 2011 14:21

So what you are saying is that there is a Martha Chadwick, your relative, and you want to know if she is related to Joshua Jackson who is the son of John and Hannah Jackson.

In order to save duplicate information it might be easier to state the location of your definite relative and the person to whom you wish to connect . The Samuel Jackson you have quoted in your first message has a birth year of 1827 but the Samuel Jackson baptised in Dewsbury was 1825.-jl

1851 census
Hannah Jackson Head Widow Born Dewsbury
Samuel Jackson Son 25 Born Dewsbury Attorneys Clerk
Mary Jackson Daughter 21 Born Huddersfield
Abraham Jackson Son 19
Joshua Jackson Son 16
John Jackson Son 12

Are you saying that this Samuel and Mary are not the same as with the Chadwick family in 1841? -jl

Thank you Janet for the 1851 census. This is the first time that Hannah has all her children together so with the 1841 including Hannah's mother Sarah with the first 2 children all the links are in place. I definitely have a new cousin!
