Thanks very much

Dont think this can be right one as I was on the understanding that she was single. Could have been living in Birtley Co. Durham by 1911. On the 1901 census she was in Ponteland Northuberland with her grandfather Alexander Badenoch and her father James was living in Birtley.

Thanks again for helping

Could she have married? There is this marriage in Chester-le-Street which isn't too far from Birtley:-

Name: Elizabeth Stokoe
Year of Registration: 1910
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Chester Le Street
County: Durham
Volume: 10a

were the other children born before 1911? If so, have you found them on the 1911 census?

Susan Report 18 Jan 2011 11:08

Have all the details of the other children, on the 1911 census the first Elizabeth is listed with all her children, but between 1911 and 1913 she has either died, but I cant find death or she left her husband then Elizabeth Stokoe brought up the children and had John in 1913. The problem is trying to find the details of Elizabeth Stokoe, we know she was from a well to do family with a farm and shops. They lived in the Sunniside/Whickham area.

Can you explain how you know where John's mother was born and her age if you only discovered her from the birth certificate?

Its a shot in the dark that it is the correct Elizabeth Stokoe, mainly because she lived in same place and the history of the family being from people whom owned shops and a farm. I will know if she is the right one when I find any of her maternal ancestors with the surname Gilmour as that was the name of John, W G stands for William Gilmour which the family know it is a family name.

Hi Cathy

Sorry to have taken so long to get back

James was born 1873/1874 in Hebburn in 1901 he was married and living in Dunston with the first Elizabeth and no children.

In 1901 he was a coal miner not sure when he joined the merchant navy, but he was in the navy as a marine fireman by the time John W G was born in 1913.

Thanks

Susan
