Well, that would explain why no Albert on the 1911 census and no death showing either, but that was the oldest child.

Like Kunctia said, divorce was really unusual at the time unless you were rich. But I've come across quite a few re-marriages.

Could be an idea to change your thread title to include Canada and his name and add a post asking for a Canadian look-up - that way one of the many helpers with access to Canadian records will take it up.

Thank you for your help, crikey so maybe she never divorced her 1st husband Paul, would this still mean her 2nd marriage was legal

Her 1st 2 children were born when she was married to Paul, and it was from one of these relatives that I was told Paul went to Canada and his youngest son went as well.

Can't see her first husband on outgoing passenger lists on FMP, but maybe someone with Ancestry sub can trace him departing or on the Canadian census in 1911.

Not sure about this, but I think there is (and was) some kind of rule that if your partner was not found after 7 years you could re-marry without it being classed as bigamy. Maybe someone else has more information on this, but if this is correct she could legally marry again to William.

Looks like they were very honest on the 1911 census - not claiming to be married like many others at the time?

Can anyone please help me, how would I know if my grandmother had divorced her 1st husband before marrying my grandfather in 1918. between 1906 - 1909 she had her 3rd child by my grandfather but they were not married until 1918
I have her birth certificate but no surname of her father, so in some records she is violet markham but on her1st marriage she was Violet Brown.

Any help would be appreciated.
