Rhona Report 17 Jan 2011 12:19

I am trying to piece together the early life of Arthur Wright born Manchester 1867. We know he was in the army and met his wife (Ellen Pearce) while in the army in Northampton. Have traced him on the 1891/1901/1911 census but cannot find any trace of him prior to this. There's a possiblity that his family moved to Northampton when he was young.
If anyone could help I would be very grateful. Also how do I go about getting his birth and marriage certificates.
many thanks Rhona

This looks like the marriage:-

Name: Ellen Pearce
Year of Registration: 1889
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Northampton (1837-1923)
County: Northamptonshire
Volume: 3b
Page: 195

On the same page is Arthur Thomas Wright.

You can order the certificate on line from the GRO at this address:-

Try this site for births and marriages:

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

when you have the index reference, you can order the certs on line from this site:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Certs cost £9.25 including postage if you quote the full ref:

If you need any help finding the marriage, post the details here and either I or somebody else will look for you. We would need some idea of when and where the marriage took place - the birth year of the first child is usually a good place to start.

If you could post the full details of the 1891 census it would help us to find him earlier.

I can't find a birth for him that fits with the year of birth that you give, but at that time there were no penalties for not registering a birth so many were just not registered at all.

However there is this birth (with the names the other way round) but a bit earlier than you thought which could be a possibility:-

Name: Thomas Arthur Wright
Year of Registration: 1863
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Chorlton
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 641

The best thing to do would be to get the marriage certificate first to see what name he gives for his father.

I see from the 1891, that he was Arthur T Wright. Do you know what the T stands for?

First child (also Arthur T) born Northampton, 1889/1890

The "T" stands for Thomas - according to the marriage registration.

What does he give as his POB in 1911, as in 1901 it is Ireland not Manchester.

As Kath said, getting his marriage cert should be your first step. How do you know that he was in the Army?

I don't think that the one born 1860 is him as that one seems to be still living with his mother in 1881 and 1891.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 17 Jan 2011 12:46

Yes Potty - I think you are right. I hadn't gone as far as the 1891 census.

Rhona - please discount the Arthur Thomas Wright born c. 1860. I will edit the above posts.

Hi.. Kath and Potty .. totally confused!!!
He was married and living in Northampton on the 1891 census so the one born 1860 may not be him.
An older cousin told us he was in the army, he has seen photos of him in uniform.
many thanks for all your help Rhona
