I am trying to piece together my "ensor" connection. David Ensor was married to an Alice Eleanor I cant find birthdates but assume around 1860.
They must have emigrated to South Africa first to Cape Town in about 1880and had a daughter Alice Eleanor Ensor in 1883 . They the moved to the East London Area .They lived In the Kei Mouth and had a further 4 daughters Mabel,Elva and Kate and Keeble.

Alice Eleanor Ensor married a Thomas Stanley Chivers.

I am having difficulty with David Ensor and trying to trace his english roots . I have a feeling his father was George Ensor who had siblings Harriet Caroline James and Thomas. It appears that Georges sibling emigrated to South Africa New Zealand and Australia. ie David and James Arthur to South Africa Edward to NZ Alice to Australia

Maybe someone can help me get on track

Thanks
John

Hello John, do you know what part of England they were from? Have you any idea if David and Alice E married in England or in SA?

I've found the name in a few 1861 census but birth year doesn't match.

Hi Paula - I saw that too. I'm puzzled though, because East London is also a district on the Eastern Cape in South Africa.

Perhaps John could confirm for us?

Edit: It would also help if John could tell us what David's profession was - that might help find him in England.

Do you mean East London in South Africa or England?

Hi

I am talking about East London South Africa. I do not have a birth date for David Ensor and that has been my stumbling block. I am estmating 1860 . His first child Alice Eleanor Ensor was born in Cape Town i 1883. I have been wondering if George Ensor was his father .

The ship's list info for them does not exist it lookas as if ship lists are really effective after 1890

Thanks for the comments so far

John, does that mean you don't know where in England they originated from, or what David's profession was, or whether they married England or SA? (earlier questions).

Baron James Ensor the artist born on April13 1860 and had siblings Harriet George Caroline elizabeth and Thomas. He was born in Brussels

His brother George seems to be the father of the ensors referred to above that emigrated to the empire

I have found a piece of paper where it appears that their father was also George and in the military with a date of 1788 and he had siter Elizabeth 1786 and a brother james 1790 and their father appears to be Thomas Ensor( Gentleman) Highgate London Main Wilnecot Branch with a death of 1820

I can find no info re "my greatgrandfather" David Ensor no birthdate and no reference to a profession

In the 1881 Census (England) there is F D L Ensor aged 21. He is a Lodger/Boarder living in St Pancras Marylebone, he is a Student of Medicine or a Medical Student - I really should have written all the info down!
I wondered if this could be your David (perhaps David was his middle name)
Anyway, this chap was born in South Africa!!!

Also on the 1881 Census was Alice Reynolds aged 20, living in Lambeth, born in Marylebone. daughter of James and Caroline.

David is living in this household in 1851:

ENSOR, Eliza 1828 23 F Hackney Middlesex VIEW VIEW
ENSOR, George L 1823 28 M Hackney Middlesex VIEW VIEW
ENSOR, George L 1847 4 M Hackney Middlesex VIEW VIEW
ENSOR, James 1849 2 M Hackney Middlesex VIEW VIEW

ENSOR, Mary Ann 1838 13 F Hackney Middlesex

If you were to order the marriage cert for David & Alice in 1882, as posted earlier, it will name his father. Given the less common name and so few registrations I feel it is very likely this is your man - but you do need those certs to confirm

John

David Married Alice Reynolds in 1882 ref FreeBMD 3rd quarter (Sep) 1882 Hackney 1b 766, his birth was 4th quarter (Dec) 1849 Hackney 3 180
I think Alice's birth might be Mar 1858 Dunmow 4a 335 - if so then born Felstead, Essex and a nursemaid in 1881 census at 26 High St, Chelmsford, Essex in house of john Taylor. In 1871 age 13 she seems to have been living with the Thompson Family, In 1861 she was at home with family in Dunmow reg district:

REYNOLDS, Thomas 36
REYNOLDS, Eliza 34
REYNOLDS, Julia 7
REYNOLDS, Ellen 5
REYNOLDS, Alice 3
REYNOLDS, Thomas M 1

Did you know about him running away and becoming a gaucho in South America and his brother going out to find him and bring him home?

Are you in contact with James's descendants?

Hi all

I am now in contact with John by email. Thanks for all your help.

I'd really like to find David's brother's family in South Africa too, This being James Dorant Ensor who was Sergeant at Arms at parliament in 1902. I have some details and photos, but lost them around 1915.
