Hi Folks, Again grateful here, all very relavent and filling in gaps as we go
so thanks! Any and all material helps the jig-saw for me. I have managed to link with the other two Families involved via GR but, they too cannot trace back as with myself? Your notes/data confirming as they come in with basics. That some of you are painstakingly applying more time is much valued and appreciated. Please stay with me a while longer and apologies if I'm off radar now and again, I do check when possible! M.

Hi M - yes, the marriage certificate is a must!

wozcav Report 7 Jan 2011 17:48

Many thanks all for this, a great deal to ponder and work out here. Marlene b.1932 was registered as STEAD STEEL so may be this significant and also why I'm blocked to date? I suppose the Marriage-Cert. would be the solution if nothing further in search allows( There are suggestions of Siblings, unproved so far!)? Again your indulgance to note your findings please and, repeated thanks yet again! M

Yes, mother's maiden name SHOULD always be the mother's birth name - although what is recorded is only the information given - and sometimes people don't always tell the truth.

Yes, Flick - I hadn't thought to look at daughter's birth record. Am I right in thinking that even if the mother had been married before then it would be her original maiden name on the birth?

Flick

Flick Report 7 Jan 2011 17:18

The previous marriage - if any - would only have been for the male, unless two Steels married!.

Ethel's daughter - surname and MMN Steel - was born in 1932.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 7 Jan 2011 17:13

Possible?

Births Sep 1892
Steele Constance Ethel St. Saviour 1d 176

Can't find any birth with names other way round.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 7 Jan 2011 17:03

It appears she married as Ethel:

Marriages Mar 1933
Steel Ethel Wozencroft Pickering 9d 561
Wozencroft Arthur J Steel Pickering 9d 561

Do you have a copy of the certificate?

Given they were fairly mature when they married it's possible there was a previous marriage?

Flick

Flick Report 7 Jan 2011 16:59

Her marriage cert would include her father's details......if known

Perhaps she was born somewhere other than England/Wales........or wasn't called Steel at birth?

She may have been illegitimate.and taken a stepfather's name if/when her mother married?

Just hypothesising..............

Hi Flick & MBI,

These are valid and important to me, confirming little info. held to date so greatly appreciated, please allow me a couple of days to note all details given here for transcription and follow ups? GRs are coming in with all this Family's GRO-Refs now I'm pleased to say and much of the searching confusions re. names etc. now sorting themselves out at last.!

Where Tree searches undertaken, I can track Ethel onward in Marriage an Death plus issue, but not her origins strangely which is the brickwall for me so far in it all? A Canadian Cousin has her as I gave @ 1894 etc. but he has no specifics either in this question and we are both stumped?

Regardless, all your assistances valued and thanks your kind indulgences to date! M.
