Hello was wondering if anyone could help me, can someone please look at this 1851 census document for James Saunders, fourth family down living at 2 Durham Place. I thought his occupation looked like treasurer, or something like that I was just wondering if anyone else could give me their opinion =]

Regards
and Happy New Year!!

Ahhh I see how it does look like farmer, could he be though? Wasnt greenwich a built up place? Or was it farmland at that point in time ?

Yeah, shirley now that I am looking at it different it does look like farmer =] just wasnt expecting that because his son went on to do quite well for himself.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 2 Jan 2011 13:29

well not that built up then. there was the Maritime and Thames related jobs but then there was also open areas as well.It would be interesting to see where Durham Place was situated. Perhaps he was a farmer before moving to Greenwich but not working as such in 1851.
I come from that area but my ancestors all seem to be labourers or had Thames related jobs like Barge builders

well Durham Place was in the Old Woolwich Road that runs off Trafalagar Road the Maritime museum and the Maritime Hospital is on ,Cant think he was farming in that area as its close to the Thames River
