I am trying to find the ancestors of Charles Chandler born 1822 in ? Kent England. Died 14/06/1899 North Sydney Australia. Maried Amy Wood Bath at Holborn Middlesex England 12/04/1850.
His father was John Chandler. I have no further information on him. There is a family tree published on Ancestry .com showing a John Chandler link. This has not been confrimed and I am convinced this is inncorrect.
I have the tree from Charles Chandler to myself confirmed with all the information available in Australia.
I would be pleased if someone would be able to assist me in my search from Charles Chandler back.

I wouldnt take much notice of ages on a census Colin, a lot of people didnt even know when they were born!

I do know the 1841 they rounded 'down' the ages of children to the nearest '5'........

Have you got his death cert as there should be a lot more info on it regading his family

I do have his death cert
I have most of the documentation on his immediate family as pertains to my lineage once he arrived in Australia.
It is the line of John and his family that is bit of a mystery.
I have spoken to others here in Australia regarding this and they in the same dilemma or as before I believe they have the wrong John Chandler

Deaths Sep 1844 (>99%)

CHANDLER John Eastry 5 85

This looks like it could be the death of the John I posted in the 1841 census. Ive checked where Selina is in 1851 and she is with a cousin so I would presume her parents are dead

The death certificate may give you more information?

Thanks Ginny
I have just looked up a recent communication I have had from another of Charles Chandler's descendants here in Australia in which she claims the John Chandler you allude to is possibly the correct one as have I from my searches.

She has His family as Sarah (wife b Ash Kent 1792) 1st child Mary Ann b1818 (does not appear on the 1841 census) Charles and Selina. She makes ther comment that Emma shown on the 1841 census Is John and Sarahs Grand child(?)
Marry Ann marries Charles Rowe and has them from the 1851 census at Margate??
She has from the 1871 census John and Sarah living at Durlock with Sarah Rowe listed as a servant. John dies April 10 1878 and Sarah dies 1876 or1878.
She is in agreement on the facts of Selina as she says that in the 1851 census she is living with her cousin George and Ann Revell.
I have not been able to contact her to find where she has obtained her proof of this information.
It would be nice to have another lead

Henry Report 2 Jan 2011 17:30

I believe the age situation on the 1841 was this.
Children (under 16, I think) had to go down as their proper age.
Adults (over 16) were permitted to round their age down to the nearest 5.
So 19 could well have been put down as 15.

Henry is correct that in the 1841 census only the ages under 15 had to be recorded correctly. Over 15 rounded to 5 years under the age. Therefore a child at age 19 would be shown as 15.

In the 1851 census at Edgeware, Middlesex, London, your Charles states that he was 28 years old (born 1822-1823) and born in Ash, Kent, occupation Gardener.

Earlier at his wedding in 1850 your Charles said that he was a gardener, and that his father John was a gardener. That is the occupation of the John from Ash, Kent shown in the censuses. His son Charles was chistened on 28 Apr 1822 at Ash, and this fits with the 1851 census details for your Charles.

In the 1841 cesnus John is shown with his wife Sarah (nee Gilham), their son Charles 15 (=15 to 19), their niece Selina 10 (who they raised after her parents died when she was a baby), and their granddaughter Emma 1. (That Selina is their niece is evidenced from her christening record, that her parents died when she was a baby is evidenced from their burial records, and that Emma is a grandchild, the daughter of their daughter Mary Ann, is evidenced from her christening record and from the 1851 census.)

John Chandler married Sarah Gilham on 16 May 1815 at Knowlton, Kent.
They had children:
Mercy (christened 2 Jun 1816 Ash)
Mry Ann (christened 16 Nov 1817 Ash)
Ann (christened 25 Jun 1820 Ash)
Charles (details above)

Charles married Amy Wood Bath, also from Kent, on 12 Apr 1850 at Holy Trinity Church, Grays Inn Rd, Camden, London, Middlesex. Before they immigrated on the "Light Of The Age" as assisted immigrants. Tthey had 2 sons in London, Charles in 1850, and William John in 1853. Their 3rd son, Alfred James, was born on the voyage.

Your Charles family line is able to be traced back through his father John to a Stephen Chandler who was having children in Ash in the period 1607 to 1629.
