There are two children I suspect of being twins. On Free BMD one is said to be found in Vol. 3a Page 318 and other other Vol. 3a Page 318a would this mean they were twins or are several children registered on one page?

Can you give the name, date and area - sometimes the suffix means a late entry hand written at the bottom of the page, ie a late registration or they'd missed it.

Ernest and George Haydon born 1891 in Congleton or Biddulph depending where you look.

Both are registered Congleton, Q2 1891. Neither are an added entry.

Looks like twins!

Sorry, don't know who you are tracing, but it looks like Ernest died in infancy:

George's birth is registered 8a 318a and Ernest's 8a 318. There weren't that many couples of child bearing age in Congleton on the 1891 census, so they could have been twins.

Thanks Mac and Moody Blue :) Now what confuses me is looking on IGI Ernest and George's parents are named as William and Mary Jane Haydon. Was it common for errors like this to happen?

if its submitted there are a lot of errors so if you can check the parish records.

Ann - this would just mean they're on the same page in the local register.

My grandmother's name was Mary Jane and yet on some documents (including the baptism of my aunt) she is recorded as Sarah Jane. I know a few people who have had the same experience with Mary Jane and Sarah Jane being interchanged for some unknown reason - perhaps the person recording the information just mis-heard.

I am certain they are twins now and am convinced they must be the children of Thomas William and Sarah Jane for one thing they are listed with them on the 1891 census and it would be a big coincidence that their Ernest died also. I just can't understand why they are listed on IGI as the children of William and Mary Jane Haydon - William I could forgive as it is his middle name but Mary??

Thanks Kath, Unusal that so many people have had this same situation, but I am convicned this must be the case and am becoming more so all the time.

On that Cheshire reg no, the page no I think is 64 of the Congleton register and 95 is the entry no. (tho I am willing to be proved wrong) I am sure I have seen it on Lancs bmd wheretwins have consecutive nos for the last no.
