John Hawks married Florence Amy Studman in Dubbo 1897 and died at Mudgee NSW in 1935. He was living in Dubbo in 1876-84 (Shearers Pay records) and he is named as living at Timbrebonngie at the time of his father Convict John's death in 1894. Some records for him have been mispelt as Hanks not Hawks.

Thanks

Florence A CROCKETT married John HANKS in Redfern NSW a couple of years before Florence STUDMAN married John 'HANKS' [HAWKS] in Dubbo NSW.

This has led to some confusion...!

From what I can tell, these are the children of John & Florence, nee STUDMAN:

Violet M b. 1898 Dubbo, d. 1898 Dubbo
Gladys I b. 1909 Narromine, m. Arthur L. DAVIS 1929

And these are children of the 'other' John & Florence (nee CROCKETT), as evidenced by the funeral notices below (Florence A HANKS remarried after John's death to Charles E B THOMAS in Sydney in 1912).

John Joseph b. 1896 Sydney, d. 1965 Parramatta
Leslie Bernard b. 1899 Redfern, d. 1950 Liverpool
Florence M b. 1901 Petersham, d. 1919 Glebe

Daughter Florence's funeral notices in SMH:
Monday 9 June 1919, p.5
HANKS.-The Friends of Mr. and Mrs. E. THOMAS, also JOSEPH and LESLIE HANKS, are kindly invited to attend the Funeral of their dearly beloved DAUGHTER and SISTER, Florence M. Hanks; to leave their residence, 19 Darghan-street Glebe, THIS AFTERNOON, at 1, o'clock, for Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood, via Mortuary Station.
HANKS.-The Friends of Mr. and Mrs. J. CROCKETT, Mr. and Mrs. W. CROCKETT, Mr. and Mrs. P. THYNNE, Mr. and Mrs. W. SMITH, ERNEST CROCKETT, and STANLEY CROCKETT (O.A.S.) are kindly invited to attend the Funeral of their dearly beloved NIECE, the late Florence M. Hanks; to leave her parents' residence, 10 Darghan-street, Glebe, THIS AFTERNOON, at 1, for Catholic Cem.. Rookwood.
HANKS--The Friends of Mr. CLAUDE MCDONALD are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral of his most esteemed FRIEND, the late Florence M. Hanks; to leave her parents' residence, 19 Darghan-street, Glebe, THIS AFTERNOON, at 1 o'clock, for Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood.

There is a Florence HAWKS who died in Mudgee in 1934 dau of Robert & Annie M. This fits with birth as Florence STEEDMAN in 1879 in Dubbo, parents Robert & Hannah Maria, nee RICHARDS. She had many sibs born in Parkes/Forbes/Dubbo areas.

This is excellent information and I thank you very much for this. I will have a good look at it.

Many thanks

The John Hawkes from my tree is the one that married Florence Amy Studman as referenced in your last paragraph. He is the person I am trying to find.

aged 3 on brother Thomas’s BC 1861 at Gundaroo NSW. Sisters Sarah Jane 1852 and Mary Anne 1855 were born at Seymour so John was born next with the two elder brothers William 1858 and Thomas 1861 born at Gundaroo.

Hit a brick wall with trying to find his birth.

Thanks Pittsy

Pittsy,

What did you do with your other thread about this family?

What was his mothers name? Is the name John as in your query, or Joseph in your reply to Cherilyn?

Mel

I deleted the entry as requested. I am new to Genes and did not realise although I did read the rules that another part of the tree was considered a double up. Age catching up - I have had a senior moment and typed Joseph instead of John. I will edit it.

Hey Pittsy, where did you see the middle name Amy for Florence? Just curious! :)

Do you have her death cert?

I posted the other info because you mentioned some records have been 'mis-spelt' as HANKS instead of HAWKS, just to clarify that there was also a legitimate HAWKS family with same parents first given names at the same time :D

Cherilyn

I got the name and info from Narrome History Society several years ago and it is Amy. There were two Florences born to Thomas Richards and Martha Fowler - the first one Florence Mabel born 1877 Dubbo died Dubbo 2 months aftter her birth.

The Thomas Richards thing is a nightmare and I have had a lot of corresponding regarding the arguments over which Thomas Richards it was. I am wanting to find my John Hawkes though. This is important to me.

Really appreciate all your help. Just back from a long walk with the dogs.

So Florence wasn't the daughter of Robert & Annie/Hannah Maria STUDMAN (nee RICHARDS), 1879 Dubbo -1934 Mudgee? She seemed such a good fit. No middle initial on her birth or death so maybe not. There was a Florence Amy death, but much later.

Too hot here for walking, 40C, thank goodness for airconditioning!

Some parts of the country are underwater, and we don't have enough, seems so unfair, doesn't it?!

It is nice here in central victoria - terribly hot on Friday though - low 40's. My Florence's parents Robert & Annie/Hannah Maria STUDMAN (nee RICHARDS), 1879 Dubbo -1934 - have I confused you ?

Cherilyn Report 3 Jan 2011 02:31

Maybe it was a slip - you said "There were two Florences born to Thomas Richards and Martha Fowler" - but maybe that was Hannah's parents? ;)

pittsy Report 3 Jan 2011 04:49

Cherilyn

It was a slip up - her parents were grandparents were Thomas Richards and Martha Fowler - her parents were Robert Studman and Anna (Hannah) Richards sorry.

Would like some help looking up John Hawkes/Hawk's birth/christening in Victoria - parents John and Mary. Birthdate circa 1862 - can anyone help. Death is 20/1/1935 at Mudgee NSW. Labourer in 1897. Married Florence Amy Studman 24/11/1897 Dubbo NSW - note transcription error at NSW BDMS. Family moved around a lot. Father John Hawkes was a convict transported in 1838 on the Earl Grey 2.

Pittsy,

Do you know the area of Victoria that he was born?

pittsy

pittsy Report 14 May 2011 07:10

Cherilyn

Definitely Hawkes - I have the Parish of Kilmore church records for the marriage of John Hawkes and Mary Ann Davis in 1852. Also have sister and first born child Sarah janes birth at Seymour 16/2/1852. I don't have the birth info on John's sister Mary Born 1855 but I have her marriage details. I have everything else for John except confirmation of his birth. Younger brothers William and Thomas were born at Gundaroo NSW. John was born in Victoria in 1862 - this has come from another family researcher. Some NSW records have the family spelt incorrectly as Hanks. Hawks changes in spelling a lot also.
