I also found the Preston birth for Henry Slater 1834 but on all the census he says he comes from Bradford, Yorks with a birth year 1831/2. Unfortunately there is no birth in IGI to match!

yes the death could be hers. Like you say a strange thing to do would be to leave a child behind........... and her being the daughter, who maybe in their older years would look after them.

My problem Dee is how did the 1861 get into census - was it late that year? Of course they could have been slow registering her. Seems strange they would dump her when moving to Halifax.......

I would think that the later registration is your S J.......... so where did the 1881 census S J Slater come from???
